NWMR Where do you shop for casual clothing?

I think the question was raised about work clothing but what about casual, weekend stuff? I ditched most of my spring, summer stuff last year because it was worn and dated. I ran over to old navy last night for a basic cami and realized that I am SO not hip when I took a quick peak around at the spring stuff. I'm probably out of the old navy age range (38)....what are some summer staples? I am usually a tshirt, shorts or skirt kind of girl of medium build and fashion clueless.

Oh, heck.  Age is just a #.  I'm 44 and still do a decent amount of shopping at Old Navy!  I don't tend to buy their shorts (usually too short), but aside from that?  They have a ton of cute tops.

I also shop at the Loft.  Only buy when stuff is on sale, though.

Target, sometimes.  But Loft and Old Navy are my main "go-to's".

  • I've been wearing my Stitch Fix jeans and a couple of tops for nicer casual.  Besides that, mostly Loft and Target.

I only dress casually since I WFH.  I do most of my shopping at Kohl's, Old Navy, and Target.  I am a huge fan of the Old Navy Pixie Skinny-Ankle pants.  They look nice and are super stretchy so they feel like you are wearing yoga pants.

I shop at a lot of the stores already mentioned - Old Navy, Target and the sale racks at Loft and Gap. Or I'll hit up the outlets.

  • I like to shop at Gap, Loft, sometimes Old Navy and TJ Maxx.  I def wouldn't eliminate ON because of your age!  They have pretty good basics and lots of options, so I'd give it a shot.

During the weekends, I'm always casual except for the one hour I'm at church.  When it's warm, you'll find me in skinny jeans, a fitted tee from either Loft or Gap (because they're dependable and wear well) and sandals or flip flops.  I don't look good in shorts or capris, otherwise I'd wear them too.

  • Land's End isn't bad, either.  Well - you have to sort out the truly matronly stuff, but their more "fitted" options are age-appropriate, well made, and cute.  I live in their casual dresses in the summer.  Plus random pieces here and there from ON.

  • TJ Maxx, Marshall's, the clearance rack at the Gap, occasionally Target for staples like t-shirts or tank tops.
  • Loft and dare I say Talbots? I used to think they were too matronly for me but lately I have found some really cute things there. Similar to the Loft, definitely only buy their clothing on sale.

  • Mostly Old Navy and Target. I tend to get more of the basic items and stray away from the trendy stuff.

This totally! I bought me some of these pants and they're the most comfortable pants ever! And they actually look good too.
  • I do TJMaxx, Marshalls, Target, Kohl's primarily.

  • Sadly since having kids a huge percent of my clothing is from Target. I find it hard to get time alone for the mall or outlets. I sometimes order a few things online but I'm always guessing at the fit and have to return a lot.

  • I get most of my stuff from Gap, Banana Republic and Jcrew.  Occasionally I get stuff at ON.  I am 35, and totally understand where you are coming from!  I feel like I'm in this in between stage where I can't really get away with super trendy things, but I'm not ready for mom jeans.  I find Gap to be really good for basics that aren't too trendy but not totally out of style.

  • I like Madewell, this place called Everlane for shirts, Modcloth (tho you have to hunt on their website, and some of their stuff can be cheaply made), and some stuff from American Apparel.
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • Jcrew, nordies, Neiman Marcus. I usually shop for specific brands. I have found the quality at target and ON to suck. Every time I buy from there it rips, unravels, fades, etc. I would rather have less clothes that I love than a bunch of stuff I kind of like.

I was actually going to say Old Navy. (I'm 39) I bought up a ton of their vintage v-necks in different colors and wear them with camis underneath (I get the camis elsewhere, usually Kohls). I usually wear khaki capris or skorts (there's where my age shows). I don't fit in "skinny" looks.
  • I'm so unfashionable since I've had my son. I wear scrubs to work, but on days I'm off, I live in my Victoria's Secret yoga pants. I know, I'm a slug. I also have some Silver jeans and Big Star jeans that I wear. Most of my clothes are from Old Navy, Express, Gap, or Target. I've only bought their kids clothes so far, but Boden appears to have some really cute women's clothing also.

Unfortunately, most clothing I like is either way too expensive or wouldn't look good on me. Or both.

  • Thanks Ladies!!! I think i just need to get some time to look around and pick some nice pieces. and Old Navy is back on my list :-)
