NBR-Looking for a good cupcake/cake recipe!

Anyone have a good tried and true recipe for chocolate or vanilla cake? or both?

I'm going to attempt to make LO's birthday cupcakes myself. I made a chocolate recipe I found on Pinterest and I found they were kinda blah. I told H they were for his birthday but it was really just a practice run for LO's party.

I have the better homes and gardens classic cookbook (the one that looks like a picnic blanket) and I swear by all of their recipes. I made their devil's food cake and it was delicious! My only complaint is that I hate working with shortening and that's what they use in their cakes. I can grab the recipe when I get home. Side note: their cream cheese frosting recipe I would eat with a spoon.

Im attempting to bake a giant cupcake now for Los bday for his cake smash. I hope it turns out. I borrowed the mold from a friend. I am going to just use box cakes but I am going to make my own home made frosting!
