Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Long sleep stretches

So last night my LO went to bed at 8 and so did I. She woke up around 11:30 and gave a couple whines but she wasn't fully awake. 11:30 was 4 hours since she had eaten. Instead of getting her up, I gave her the pacifier. She went back to sleep until 12:30. She started to stir a litte, but again wasn't really crying at all. At this point, I got her up to feed her. Do you try the pacifier first before getting your LO up to eat (unless she is crying of course)? I'm just wondering if that's ok to do. I figure she'll let me know if she's hungry by spitting it out, crying, and not going back to sleep right? I think she might have gone back to sleep at 12:30, but I felt bad she hadn't eaten in so long. My LO is 8 weeks old and breastfed.

Re: Long sleep stretches

  • She may be ready to do extended sleep at night. Which is awesome!! From what I read etc. some babies can go 8-9 hours at night between feedings by 8 weeks. My 10 week old can go 7 hours ....)

I don't see any reason not to try a pacifier first. My first LO would take it when she was not hungry. My second LO doesn't want them. Ever.

With the extended nights, make sure you're feeding enough to keep your milk supply up. To help with this you can pump too.

My LO is asleep by 9. I top her off before I go to bed, usually at 11 or so. I'm working. I'm up at 5:30 to get ready for the day. I pump a little first thing. LO sleeps until 6:30/6.45. This works for us. So far my milk supply is fine and I'm avoiding the middle of the night feedings.

  • We use the pacifier... She won't take it if she is truly hungry. At 8 weeks, our LO will sleep 7-9 hours at night, pretty consistently. (Bed between 9 and 10, up between 5 and 7). She is EBF. I typically offer the same side at the last night feeding and the first morning feeding, and pump the opposite side. My supply seems to be fine.

  • My EBF baby was STTN from about 9-11 weeks old. Congrats! Not to be a downer, but it probably won't last once she hits the 3 month growth spurt.

I have to disagree with PP though. I would not pump during the night if she's not wanting to eat. This will help your body adjust to your baby's needs. After a few days, your body will learn not to make as much milk overnight and you will be able to sleep more comfortably!
