I just need to vent!

Sorry for the long post, but thanks for reading! This morning I woke up feeling fantastic, so excited I'm 13 weeks today, thinking if the opportunity arose I'd share my good news today at work. About three hours into my shift, a higher up and I were talking about a coworker who went into labor today, when he asked me "so how are YOU feeling? Any morning sickness? Or are you just tired?" I stared blankly, definitely not expecting it, and said "nope, I'm feeling good! 13 weeks today!" He must have seen that I was shocked he knew, since he responded with "yeah, [the assistant manager] made the announcement at our meeting last week." What!? I had confided in my manager, thinking it was for the best, since I felt a bit out of it and ill for a while. But I confided, with plenty of reassurance, that my secret was safe. And come to find out, a week after I had told him, he told everyone in the meeting! Firstly, it irritates me that he broke my confidence. Secondly, I'm upset with the way it was presented, since my higher up said "we need to start looking into hiring a new person because [she] is pregnant." What is that? Am I losing my job? And lastly, SO and I work together. We have been debating about the right time to spill the beans, which is why I told only who I thought needed to know. Anyway, both SO and I are pretty upset with our manager. I feel insecure with the way it was said and I'm just disappointed in general. I feel like he stole my thunder and betrayed my trust. Blah!

  • Yeah, that was really crappy of him. You have every right to be mad!

  • Wow, I'd be super pissed also! You shared in confidence & your trust was betrayed! I can't believe HE would spill the beans, your beans, what a jerk! So sorry Momma :(

  • Ug!  What a douche!  You are totally right to be annoyed and they should not be threatening your job either- pretty sure that is illegal.  Start researching your rights so that you know exactly where you stand.

  • That is not cool. I would be so mad and hurt. I would want to say something to him. But I know my emotions would get in the way and I would get myself in more trouble. I would check your rights and where you stand.((HUGS))

  • That's what SO said. I have yet to look into it, but I'm pretty sure I have heard in the past they can't let you go simply for being pregnant, however, they can "find" something else and blame it on that if they wanted.
  • wow! How horrible!!! I don't know why anyone thinks they have the right to share someone else's news like that... Jerk jerk jerk

  • That is so frustrating. I am so sorry he did that! I would speak to him and tell him you didn't appreciate that and ask about why he is hiring a replacement.

  • Wow, what a jerk! My local boss blabbed too, but I had emailed my supervisor in another state the day before, so I didn't mind as much...he's just a serial cc'er, and for some reason forwarded my announcement email (which he was included on) to an entire project team to discuss scheduling! It was weird and had nothing to do with my announcement, but when you scrolled down there was a whole email from me and my husband about me being pregnant. Weirdos.

  • Totally would be pissed too. I had a similar experience. The CEO of my company announced when I was 8 weeks to everyone at an owners meeting! I was livid. Men suck. Hope he at least appologizes to you!
  • That sucks.  It's amazing to me how people assure you that you are discussing this in confidence, but it's not always the case.  I experienced a similar situation.  I went to my principal at about 6w because I was very sick and actually left school early a couple of days so I felt like she should know the reason.  A few days later, one of the assistant principals came up to me and whispered "How are you feeling?" I just stared at her and then glanced at my co-worker (who knew because she would watch my class when I needed to leave suddenly and was the one I thought had spilled the beans).  She didn't tell.  It was my principal.  The assistant principal said that they talked about it in their administration meeting because of the need for a long term sub so that means all five administrators know.
  • That sounds like a major HIPAA violation if I've ever heard one!
