TTC Check-In

Good morning everyone!

How is your/your partner's TTC journey progressing?

**Reminder - If you have a BFP to share, please create a new thread so everyone can see it. Thanks :) **

QOTW: What was your highlight of this past weekend?

We've been working on baby #1 since July 2013 using Open ID donor sperm.  8 IUI attempts with 5 actual IUIs and one chemical pregnancy.  We have one fresh IVF cycle under our belts as well as a FET.  I have endometriosis and a uterine septum that was corrected via surgery in November 2013.

11/14/14 -  Second HSG shows that tubes are still clear and ute is looking good.

12/6/14 - Started BCPs in prep for IVF #2

12/22/14 - Saline u/s and endometrial scratch (All was clear and OUCH!)

1/2/15 - Began stimming for IVF #2

Re: TTC Check-In

  • I'm 8 dpiui. I've failed in my attempt to be much more zen this cycle and forget how many dpiui I am. I took my first test this morning, obviously BFN. I figure I'll test every day until Friday, then I'll stop so DW and I can celebrate her birthday. I'm due to start on Tuesday, the day after her birthday.

This past weekend we picked out our next donor (assuming this cycle doesn't take). It was a lot easier than I expected. I just read through a couple profiles, and when I got to this guy's, I decided he was it and I was done. My wife read through all the profiles that met our filters and made little flash cards for each one, but still ended up picking the same one as me. I like him a lot, so that makes me feel better about having to move on to another donor.

We also discussed taking a break next cycle, and I think we're going to do it. We'll be able to drink on our vacation in Puerto Rico and at my sister-in-law's wedding, and we're also planning to do bootcamp for a month in preperation for the wedding. There is a risk that we'll end up having to take a break for two months because I might ovulate while we're in CA for the wedding, but I think I'm okay with that.

QOTW: Highlight of the weekend was a baby shower I went to for the couple that run the Spansih language school I take classes at. It was quite the party. There was so much English and Spanish going on, and I got to have conversations in each. I'm very excited for the arrival of their baby!

  • Looks like CD 32 for me today. I have started spotting finally but nothing significant so far. It is at least movement in a forward direction, and I am thankful for that.

A semi-close friend texted us both this morning and finally told us that she is pregnant. We guessed a while back but were waiting for her to tell us. Turns out that she is having twin boys. It was a little bit of a blow, even though we already knew. I don't think I would be quite as upset if it wasn't for the fact that 6 months ago she was on our couch saying that she wasn't sure if she wanted to be with her husband anymore. They already have a daughter who will be two in a few months.

As we got the news, I was starting to fill out an application to see if we can get a loan for the money to cover IVF. We have two vials left. We are moving forward with an IUI for this cycle. If this one does not work, then we will move forward with IVF for the last vial, assuming that everything lines up financially.

QOTW: My highlight of the weekend was the 1st birthday party we went to for one of C's cousin's daughters. It was a great time! We don't get to see them often and I'm glad we were able to travel to the party.

  • I'm on CD 6 today.  I'm sitting this cycle out and we'll try next time around since I have quite a bit of stress going on with my work and all.  I should get my period at the end of April and then it will be go time!  I'm excited and optimistic :) I think I'm going to try acupuncture.  There's an acupuncture office that works in conjunction with my RE and they specialize in fertility, and do a series for IUI patients.  May as well give it a shot.  In the meantime, they suggest doing acupuncture once a week before the next cycle.  I'm going to call and see if they can refer me to anyone in town for this month since it's hard to get to Indy for my appointments in April but I can get a couple rounds in before my next IUI!

I would love, love, love to get back to exercising but for now I just can't.  I've been suffering from a terrible case of bronchitis.  I wake up every morning with lungs full of fluid that I have to expel multiple times throughout the night.  It's gotten to the point where C wants me to sleep in the guest bedroom :( I suppose I may as well because then I can at least hack up the crud without running to the bathroom and just get it out in a bucket or something.  The worst thing about bronchitis is how endless it feels.  It takes weeks to heal.  So that means no treadmill for me.  If I have a hard enough time breathing just sitting at my desk, I can't imagine a good, hard run will benefit my lungs much.  Once I'm well again, I can't wait to get started again.

For now I'm doing well eating low-carb.  Gonna keep that up until after my next IUI.  I've been making soups to eat throughout the week for lunch that are packed full of vegetables.  I don't like veggies very much but they're good when they're soft and flavored with herbs and chicken broth.  Tonight I'm going to make a roasted butternut squash bisque (vegan) for the week.  Next week I may do a mushroom soup, and the week after tomato & basil.  Goes well with my low-carb wrap!  Yummy!

QOTW: We had some friends over from out of town for a dinner party.  It was a lot of fun!  I forget how much I enjoy entertaining until I'm able to do it again.  They got engaged recently and told us the full story :) It was very sweet.

  • 2dpiui today. Start progesterone tonight, so hoping all works out this time....it feels different than the last ones, but that could just be my mind of course! If this cycle doesn't work then may move onto IVF or more IUI's, we shall see... Highlight of the weekend....getting a vitamix! DW has been dying for one for a long time and we finally got it Saturday so I've been making lots of smoothies and soup. It's fun :-)
  • We found out that it looks like I am going to be the one to carry. EEK.  Thanks to a not-so-great cardio visit by DW.

I dont know what to do now-- we called the local IVF place that does IUI etc but now are thinking we should start by just going to the regular obgyn and getting info/ checked out.  Then figuring out what insurance will cover & not cover (need codes to ask, they didnt understand when i said IUI, etc) then finding a good place to get donor sperm (there are more local places, but i heard california cryo is the best and they have a NYC office now).

We want to keep it a secret until we are ready, so we can't ask TOO many questions of local friends going through it!

Anyone have thoughts/tips that will help us?

  • 4dpo as of today and anxiously waiting until we can test. The week is crawling by a little slow but I'm sure that's only because of the wait. DW has been on a prenatal for the past few weeks so at least we have that base covered. :)

QOTW: Highlight of the weekend was definitely being able to spend a little more time with my wife. We both got out of work way earlier than expected yesterday so we were able to bond for a little bit more than usual. Our schedules always have us at odds when it comes to our days off.

  • Hello all! We are 10dpIUI. Looking to test towards the end of the week. C is taking progesterone so we actually have to test and we are not looking forward to that...not that we aren't hopeful but still a little raw from our MC...a lot of emotions. Things are going okay. We are both pretty busy with work but we are taking good care of each other!

  • Hi everyone!

So A and I have been talking non stop about when we can possibly start TTC. We can hardly contain our excitement as it starts to become more of a reality. We arn't able to start just yet..I still have to start my first job as an rn. And we want to have at least a small commitment ceremony on the beach first. No plans have been made yet as to when we will have the ceremony or anything but I would like to do it soon, maybe in November, and then start trying soon after. I wrote a nice letter to my brothers that we're going to give to them-asking them if they would be willing to be sperm donors for A to get pregnant. I'll keep you all posted on what they say.

My highlight of the weekend was spending time with A and our furbabies and talking about getting married/starting our family. Since we both had to work we didn't get to do much but on Tuesday we are going to see Divergent :) I'm excited. Not as excited as A though, she has read the books and everything. She's nerdy like that and I love her for it.
  • Good evening!

We've got a date for the next IVF; April 8th. We're both very nervous, but hoping it will go well.

QOTW: DW and I actually got to go on a date for once. My BIL and his family were over so they looked after the girls whilst me and DW went out for dinner ALONE. It was a very pleasant change.

  • Tomorrow is 13dpiui and we're going to the doctor, I guess for a blood test? I am dying to test but DW (carrier) doesn't want to and wants to wait fort he doctor tomorrow. I'm not feeling super hopeful, since there haven't been any signs or anything, but I wasn't hopefully the cycle we got out BFP so I'm trying to stay positive. Trying to brace myself for either result.

  • @mrs&mrsk - Definitely start by finding out what your insurance coverage is.  That might help you figure out what path you want to start with.  It will certainly give you an idea of the financial piece.  Some folks have had luck without going to a RE.  I am glad we went right to one because of my diagnoses, which were not diagnosed beforehand.  I was told I had a bicornuate uterus and the doc at my OB/GYN office told me I would have no problems with having a pregnancy.  My RE said differently after he did the corrective surgery.  I like knowing as much as possible and going to a RE makes that possible for me.

  • Today we did SO first IUI. We were so nervous we were going to miss her window given our flight for FL is tomorrow morning. The IUI went so smoothly and we were told with it being a frozen sample it was excellent with numbers so the doctor was super happy about that. Now the TWW begins it is kind of nice being in this part of the process again.

QOTW: What was your highlight of this past weekend? This past weekend we got to have a niece and auntie day. It isnt often we just take one of the 3 kids of my BIL, but we were able to take the youngest for the day and she loved it; really made her feel special.

Married in September 2010, started TTC journey November 2012

New Plan: Reciprocal IVF, me as carrier wife's eggs. Just went through insurance and received partial approval, so my part will go through my IVF benefits and wife's part will be out of pocket. Now just finalizing finance plans to cover the oop costs. Doctors office is in process of moving to a new building so there are no IVF start ups until March/April 2015.

  • OK my insurance is paying for nothing... well just the initial test. that means $2400-2900 MONTHLY OOP.  we may need to wait until November when DW can sign up for her health insurance again if they cover more. we didnt want to do this initially because mine is better with "normal" visits/ER/specialists and she's the one who needs all that! lol

It is my understanding that most insurance plans (unless you have a big fancy plan through a group or work plan) whether its primary or secondary are pretty stingy on the infertility assistance...it stinks...

We are going to check out her policy and see if she can start it still (just reached the 3 month mark at her job otherwise will have to wait until November/ open enrollment). After that we will have to analyze the cost of it being her primary (higher copays) and cost of enrolling (they have incentive for not enrolling, so it's kind of a double hit) -- over the course of April thru Nov hopefully (i guess you can only cancel during open enrollment?)... plus the cost of copays for the IUIs and what they cover... I'm sure it's worth it but by how much....

You may also want to see if your partner's employer offers a Flexible Spending Account - it can take a teeny bit of the sting out of OOP costs, including the purchase of donor sperm if you are going that route.   It's not the same as having health care costs covered by your health care plan -- GRRRRRRRRRR! -- but every bit helps.

OK my insurance is paying for nothing... well just the initial test. that means $2400-2900 MONTHLY OOP.  we may need to wait until November when DW can sign up for her health insurance again if they cover more. we didnt want to do this initially because mine is better with "normal" visits/ER/specialists and she's the one who needs all that! lol

she does! i think it maxes out at $500 or maybe thats a minimum... waiting on all the paperwork to read up on it all.  it's so weird how different insurances are. hers is better in so many ways but mine is in so many different ways!

  • Currently, we are still looking at sperm donors, though we've narrowed it down to four possible donors now. It's really hard to pick one since they don't allow you to look at pictures of them. We could pick one who we think will look like me, and he could end up being completely different! I'm really worried about that, to be honest. We actually considered asking my brother to donate sperm to us, since we know he looks like me, but since I'll be the one carrying, I'm not entirely comfortable with that.

QOTW: Laire and I were both working on Saturday, so we didn't do much, but it was mother'd day in the UK on Sunday, so we spent the day with our mums. It was really nice, since my mum and Laire's mum don't normally get on really well, since they are so different, but they were both perfectly lovely to each other on Sunday. They seemed to have teamed up actually; they both kept on talking about since Gay Marriage is legal here now, we should get married. And Laire's just like no go away, haha.

We looked and found up to 7 that we "like" we can see the donor's info but no pix for free... you can get pix for like $25-50 per or $145 unlimited for 3 months. you cant do that in the UK?

No. The anonymity laws of unknown egg and sperm donors in the UK are really strict. You don't get to know anything about them other than their race, nationality, hair and eye colour and occupation, and some medical history.
  • I'm late to the party, I think. :)

We are a go for our first IVF cycle!  So far it looks like DW will start taking birth control pill on Fri 4/4 and take the last "active" pill to be taken on 4/17/14.

  • Just had HSG done yesterday and everything looked great. For some reason I find the things my RE says hilarious, this time it was "everything looks great, they filled and spilled. " Waiting to surge next week so we can do our first IUI.

Best thing about last weekend was DW taking the week old ducklings on a duck parade around the dinning room table.
