My SIL had her baby on late Saturday night. The baby ended up in NICU and it was a long hard induction/labor/delivery and she was in no shape to make trips to NICU to BF that first night. She's been trying to BF ever since the next morning. The baby's latching on has been hit or miss but she's been pumping regularly but has nothing - not even colostrum coming out. She's at over 72 hours - massaging, heat, BFing, pumping. She feels the heaviness and tingling so it's there. Just not coming out.
She's going to the doctor later today but if any of you had ideas in the meantime.
Re: Need help
See if she can try hand expressing. I had a very sleepy baby who would not latch well for days, and I couldn't get much out with a pump. I just hand expressed the colostrum into a little cup and squirted (more like let him suck it out of dropper) it into his mouth with a dropper (very slowly). Or sometimes if he wouldn't nurse I would express it directly into his mouth.
I didn't have much success with pumping or nursing until my milk came in around day 5.
GL to your SIL
She's keeping at it and got some clostrum with a combination of hand expressing and pumping!!!
