What ONE attribute would you like your baby to have as an adult? Examples of positive attributes include, but are not limited to, inventive, ambitious, entrepreneurial, humorous, warm, etc. (These are just positive, but you could do negative as well.)

And why?

ETA spelling is hard
ETA again for reasoning behind said quality

  • Humourous! H and I are generally comcial people and always try to turn a bad situation around by making jokes or keeping things light hearted and I hope he gets that.
  • Hmm - that's a hard one! I'm not sure of the word for this - stick-to-it-ness?  That quality that makes someone keep trying even if it is difficult or they fail initially.

I heard a story on NPR where they are trying to 'teach' this in schools now. They are calling it 'grit'.

  • yes, perseverance or maybe resilience.  I used to teach flute and piano lessons and the kids that seemed to really get the most out of it were the ones who had to struggle a little to succeed. Some kids, even some of those with a lot of natural talent just threw in the towel when they got frustrated or challenged. Their whole confidence and motivation would be shattered if they had a bad performance or were having a hard time with a piece or concept and I'd have to spend a lot of time cajoling them and getting them back on their feet.  Others just kept trucking along and whether or not they succeeded in any given performance or piece of music, they seemed to get the most satisfaction and enjoyment out of their progress and the musical experience in general.  I think that quality probably extends into whatever endeavor they would choose to pursue in their life.

  • @sleepy33 - I heard that same story.  There's a TED talk about it I think.  I'm not sure how much of it you can teach, but its an interesting concept.

That was my thought, too. I think there was some discussion about how it may be somewhat like trying to teach a moral value, which is something that is curiously lacking in schools, when you think about it.

  • Kindness. My husband is so kind and patient. I hope Julian gets those qualities. I can be a bitch and patience is NOT one of my virtues. lol..

  • Passion.  I want my daughter to be passionate about whatever it is she does/is doing.  When you have passion for something you don't give up, you do it because you want to and usually do it to the best of your ability.

  • I want both my kids to choose to be happy, whatever life throws at them. I truly believe happiness is a conciliatory choice that you make every day, and I hope we can show them that they can control that aspect of their lives by always looking for the best in any situation and being grateful for what they have.
  • Definitely confidence. You have to believe in yourself to have others believe in you too. I never want him to doubt himself. It seriously is so hard to chose just one.. I also want him to be patient, loving, kind, humble, compassionate, respectful.. The list goes on and on. He better be a little gentleman.

  • I think this is so hard too, because so many things come to mind, like confident, ambitious, kind, loving, etc.

But overall, I hope my son is compassionate. Too many people in this world don't care at all about others or have an ounce of compassion for someone else, so I would really like Hunter to embody that.

  • Wow, only picking one is super hard. But I would say compassionate. I want Joey to be able to relate with others and empathize with them rather than strike them down and be insensitive.

I want DS to be an old soul. Enjoy simple things in life, know the value of a hard earned dollar, respect people who deserve it, be independent, appreciate family, be a hard worker, have the kind of manners men used to be taught.....just a few "old school" characteristics that I feel are important for a man to have.

  • Responsible. I want him to be able to make good decisions based on knowing the reward/consequence for all of his actions and how it will affect him and others.
