nwmr: anyone have a pergola on your patio/deck?

our backyard has zero trees and the late day sun is blinding back there in summer b/c the back of the house faces west... I am thinking that a pergola might help w/ that but it seems like it would only help when the sun is pretty high in the sky- as it begins to set, wouldn't it still blind us sitting under the pergola? I think maybe you can get some sort of shade that can be pulled down or outdoor fabric drape? How does that work? Any thoughts on pergolas for shade when you have no trees or other shade sources?

    We have one and it is nice, but I wouldn't say it provides a ton of shade. What about a picnic table with a big umbrella? That's what we use.

    Our backyard faces west and with no shade it just gets crazy hot there in the afternoon. It is nice for my vegetable garden though.

    We have a pergola and have vines growing on it, so it does offer a fair amount of shade.  The planks are pretty close together, and then when you add in the vines, there are definitely areas underneath that are fully shaded.  We love it.

    Thanks all! I like the vines but have a black thumb and would have to hire someone to maintain it lol. We would have one built for our patio so I think we could customize it to help with shade or whatnot . I am hoping the patio/ landscaping ppl might have some good ideas though in the meantime we have been walking around our neighborhood trying to see what others have done...
