Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

experience with cystic fibrosis?

Hello. I am getting concerned. My son is 19 months and has been sick the entire month of march.  His pedi isn't concerned because he is a "daycare kid."  Do babies get tested for this at birth? (we live in Massachusetts)  We have a nebulizer and have been plowing through the albuterol.  My sister just found out she is a carrier.  I'm wondering if he has it. What should I look for?  He will look like he's getting better and then the coughing and runny nose are back.  The coughing is usually worse at night.  Any help is appreciated.  (I'm thinking of finding another pedi)

Re: experience with cystic fibrosis?

  • Yes, all newborns are screened for CF in all 50 states as part of the heel prick bloodtests when they are born. If your sister is a carrier, it is possible for you to be as well, but both you and your husband would need to be carriers to pass it on to a child. If you plan to have more children, then ask your OB or CNM to order the blood test to check your status (they may already have done this before and just not mentioned it if you were negative).

What you're describing sounds within the realm of normal winter illness cycles, but if you are concerned, see another pedi for a second opinion. I hope your LO feels better soon.

  • Starting at 3 months my son would be very wheezy and we were first given albuterol to help with it but it was getting to the point where it wasn't helping as much. We went to a pulmonary doctor and it was determined he had "restrictive airway disease" aka Asthma, and he was prescribed budesonide to take nightly through the nebulizer. Before he started that medicine, when he would get a cold it would sit in his lungs causing wheezing and coughing for a longer period of time than a normal cold and he will have to take albuterol more than what we are able to give at home so he was admitted to the hospital for a few days so he would be able to get the extra medicine he needed to help his breathing. Once we started budesonide, the albutlerol usage pretty much stopped. Back in February the doctor switched us to Qvar and that did not work for him, he was sick all of February. So since we have been back on budesonide he has been golden again.

If anyone in your family has asthma, it's worth talking to your doctor about.

  • Thank you for everyone's responses.  I feel better knowing that DS does not have CF.  Just the last few days it seems the albuterol has not been helping and he was up all night last night.  I think he had a slight fever today too.  So I think I will call the doctor tomorrow.  Ericaann413, my sister has asthma, so I will definitely mention that when I call them and push for a specialist.  Thank you again!!
