Favortive running belly bands....

My sister wants me to start using a belly band when I run so I do not get diastasis recti. Do you use one or know a good brand? I have a $25 Amazon gift card so I would love to use it on that. If no one has any ideas I'll just buy a random one but wanted feed back first. Thx!

  • I have no clue what this is. My doctor told me she thought it was great I was continuing to run and said nothing about a band like this. Are other runners planning on using one?

  • Sorry for the double post. I just looked up the condition and it sounds like it is caused by excessive abdominal exercises and not necessarily running. Have you heard of this being a problem for runners specifically? A quick online search doesn't seem to suggest a correlation.

  • It isn't linked directly to running. My sister has this and is trying to fix it and is being very paranoid. I figured it couldn't hurt to use one. I know running does pull on your muscles though, especially as you get bigger. If no one has ever used one then I will pass. :)

  • I had diastasis with each pregnancy it's related to stretching of stomach muscles as uterus grows some people get it some don't. It does go away postpartum and you shouldn't do any ab exercise until its resolved. But this is my first running pregnancy and I've heard the belly support bands reccomendation as well but don't know which either,

Sadly, it doesn't always go away postpartum. A former coworker of mine got this with her 3rd (and final) pregnancy, and to this day, you can almost place a hand between the space where her abs should meet.

My sister still has it for I think 6 years now and has tried numerous things to fix it.

  • It's funny that you ask this now because I just ordered the Medela maternity support belt from Amazon and received it today.  I am also going to try to continue to run throughout this pregnancy.  I bought this one b/c it was recommended on some running blogs -- particularly one (NYC running mama) that has run a few marathons during pregnancy.  I'm not big yet, but figure the extra support couldn't hurt as my belly grows.

  • I have never heard of a running band but I am going to watch this post to see what others have to say.
But do you all have a constant urge to pee while running? Its frustrating.

  • Okay I should say usually it resolves itself, true it can persist and also can usually be surgically repaired if persistent but that isn't commonly necessary.

  • @MrsKasel10 : Yes, that's why now I try to know about bathrooms on the way or at least a nice set of trees or a bush.

Yes! But I have learned I can run through it. My last run the peeing urge came around 3ish miles but I still finished my 8 without an accident. For me (and this was with my first pregnancy), it just took some time to be confident I wouldn't have an accident despite how I felt. Mind trickery!

  • I stopped at every bathroom during my half marathon, I was nervous. I routinely run 5 miles without a bathroom break right now, but the pressure on my bladder starts up as soon as I start running. So it feels like I have to pee constantly.

How is it going with this support belt? I'm 18 weeks and went for a jog this morning and thought I might want some extra support in the coming weeks so I was glad to come across this thread!
