WWWMD: job negotiations

Hi Ladies, we will be relocating in June for DH to do a pharmacy residency. I interviewed for a position 30 minutes from DH's program that I'm really excited about, a physician assistant gastroenterology job. I'm in a related field now, the new job hours are better, and I really like the doctors I would be working with. Tuesday I was given an informal job offer, yay! The salary was reasonable, it's comparable to my base salary now. The benefits are great. The only caveat is that I would only have 20 days ETO (per year) the first two years. ETO includes holidays, sick days, and vacation days. Standard ETO changes to 30 days after two years. At my current job I have 30 days ETO. My concern is that I will have 2 young kids in daycare full time, I hope 20 days is enough time. DH will be unable to take sick days during residency. However, DH's family would be nearby, so they could possibly help in a pinch. The physicians get 30 days ETO from the start. Is it reasonable to ask for 25 days ETO? The company wants to send a formal job offer today. I want to ask but I don't want them to retract their offer. Thanks ladies!

  • Ask for 30 and tell them it's what you currently have. It's only 2 years for the change to kick in, so it's not that huge a concession for them to make for you. Unless they just have a policy that they won't budge. In which case I would guess they would say that, not rescind the offer.

    This. Good luck!
  • I agree you should ask. People usually negotiate over salary but there's no reason you can't negotiate for other things instead. I think 20 days is too few with young kids in DC. I get 21 days PTO plus holidays and I burned through a lot early this year because of snow days. I also think you really need backup sitters lined up. My mom watches a sick kid for me at least once a month. It's especially important for you with your DH unable to help ever.

  • definitely ask. worst case they say no...they wont rescind the offer tho. good luck!
  • Ask for what you want. The worst they can say is no, and then you're no worse off, but you definitely won't get it if you don't try.

I agree that there is no harm in asking.  I'm jealous of the 20 days, though.  I get 2 weeks a year of sick and vacation.  Guess who never takes off when the kids get sick?  This girl.
