How soon to start looking for Nanny for September?

Hi ladies, long time member here but I've never posted on the WM forum before. Currently I work FT and DD is in a daycare that is on my drive to work. I'm due with DD2 at the end of June and get 6-8 weeks leave.

The daycare we currently use doesn't take babies (12m+), and I don't really love them anyway. And I REALLY don't want to have two locations for drop-off/pick-up. So, we're thinking we'll end up looking for a Nanny for when I go back to work. We did this when DD was an infant as well, it was sooo much cheaper than DC for infants in this area.

My question is, how soon should I start looking? I was planning on using Care.com, just because that's what I used three years ago. Is it usual to start about two months before I need a Nanny? Four months? Any suggestions would be great!

Re: How soon to start looking for Nanny for September?

  • I would start looking now and see what is out there.  I would kick it up a notch once summer hits.  There are probably a lot of nannies that have summer gigs that will end in the fall (right around the time you need daycare).

  • id probably start in june/july..and plan to hire 2 weeks before you are going back to get the children used to the nanny and give her the ability to shadow you and learn the schedule, etc.
  • I would wait until about 2 months out. I just put an ad up and got 48 responses. If you look now, you'll get a whole bunch of people who need work now.

  • We started when E was about a month old, which was about 2 months before we needed someone to start.  We went through an agency, but the process took about 6 weeks including collecting interest, interviews and background checks.  We did a trial run about 3 weeks out and then she started full time a week before I went back to work.

  • I am due this month and will need a nanny starting in July. I posted a job on care.com a couple of months ago and surprisingly found a couple of people who will be open at about the time I need care. I thought I may be starting a little early but we were tone between nanny and in-home DC so I wanted to see what my options were. Last week I met with a nanny who I think will end up being our provider. The family she is with is moving away this summer so the timing is perfect.

I would say you don't necessarily have to start that soon but I am glad to have it take care of before I have the baby.

  • I started asking around when I was 8-9 months pregnant and then started my serious search/interviewing about a month before. I had coworkers who had to go through a few nannies before they found their permanent one, so it might be good to start earlier.  I had the nanny start a week before I went to work to get everyone (including myself) acclimated.
