20 Week Growth Discrepancy

Hey ladies, I was just wondering if any of you have experience with a large growth discrepancy.

Our docs have to monitor our Baby A (Madison) a bit closer because of an SUA. We got less than great news today in regard to Madison. While it looks like she won't have any chromosome abnormalities/Down's (more than likely- no markers for it), she definitely isn't growing like she needs to be. When the girls growth difference is 20% or higher, it causes extreme alarm per the doc. At 16 weeks, their difference was 8% and now it's 17%.

This means, I'm now on a modified bed rest indefinitely. I have to go to work and come home and lay down in order to attempt getting more calories to her. They predicted that at my 24 week appointment, I'll have to quit work.

If the growth difference gets to 25%, it sounds like I'll be put on hospital bed rest, and we have to pray that this happens after 24 weeks because a growth difference that high would mean her best shot at making it is outside of me. Otherwise, the risk of her being stillborn is much greater.

Have any of you experienced this growth discrepancy with positive outcomes? I'm so concerned about what will happen with her in the next 4 weeks.

Thanks, guys :)

  • I posted something similar over a week ago. At 19 weeks twin A was 12oz and twin B 7oz. I found out Monday that B also has a SUA and thankfully that the Mat21 results were negative. I know the drs have to tell us the worst possible outcomes, but it just makes it so much harder. ((Hugs)) I'll keep you in my T&Ps.

  • Yeah, we've known about the SUA since 16 weeks, but they don't think that's what is contributing to her size discordance.  They say that she actually has less of the placenta.  So I have NO clue what happens from here!  *sigh*  Thank you for the T & Ps! :)

  • What type of twins are they?  Mine are di/di, so two separate sacs and placentas, and have had a size discrepancy from the start.  Right now, at 28wk1d, baby A is in the 23rd percentile, while baby B is in the 72nd (over a pound difference is estimated!).  I'm having growth scans every two weeks with a high risk OB, but haven't been put on any type of bedrest or restrictions.  If your babies are sharing a placenta, then I can see more of the need for careful monitoring and bedrest.  We've been told from the beginning that since our twins are not identical, what matters most is that they both continue to grow along their respective growth curves (so it's ok that they're different sizes and growing at different rates, so long as both are still growing).  Hopefully your sweet babies will continue to grow, grow, grow!

  • @sarah_beth2005, I'm so glad yours are growing according to their respective growth curves!  Ours are mono/di, so they are sharing the placenta.  I guess that's why they're being so strict about me taking it easy!

Thank you so much, Jules!  I didn't want to send it to you and Sarah and freak you guys out!  She's been smaller for a while now though, just didn't think it was going to be THIS big of a difference so early on.
