PSA: Infant CPR

A question from the newbie thread inspired this post (@wtfisup was wondering if hospitals required/offered an infant CPR class).

Infant CPR is really easy to learn. There are videos to teach you and the American Heart Association and the Red Cross have some great information, as well. IMO an infant CPR class is well-worth the cost. You might never even use the information, but it is incredibly helpful and reassuring to know that you would know what to do in a scary situation. Once you learn it, you can practice on a regular basis on a baby doll or stuffed animal. You will feel like the world's biggest moron (and look like one, too) as you bend over your teddy bear and pretend to give him breaths, but it is so, SO important to know this information.

And, no, I do not work for the AHA :) This is just something that often gets looked over and is incredibly important.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Thanks for the reminder!  I need to sign us up for this.
One hospital nearby offers CPR as a separate class from first aide, while another combines the two and deals with other emergency situations.
I hate the idea of being in a "seconds matter" situation with my baby.  so scary, but obviously well worth it to be informed enough to save a life.

  • We're taking our class this Sunday at the local lactation center.  We both think this is really important to know, if only for peace of mind (hopefully we never have to use it!), and it's also an opportunity to check out the lactation center.

  • We took the class! But you are so right.. It's important to practice.. I already cant remember some things!
  • So glad someone posted this. I teach infant and child CPR and one of the great things about the classes is that they often teach you how to react in a choking situation, too. And as all STMs know, it is not If your child chokes, it is WHEN. You need to be prepared! Thanks again!
