Parenting after a Loss

Q for powdered formula users (martinimomma)

Looks like we will be doing a neocate trial for DD in the hope of getting on top of her rash and newly developed blood in her poop (sorry for the TMI). As ridiculous as this sounds, we have never used powdered formula before - with DS we used rtf alimentum, and did the same with DD till now. I've read the neocate can and a few websites, but the information is so inconsistent I don't know what to believe. And I am waiting to hear back from the pedi but thought I'd consult my panel of "experts" here while I wait. So, the question is....do I really have to boil the water? And if yes and I opt to use bottled water instead, can I use fluoridated water so long as the fluoride content is below the content in tap water (yes I sadly looked this up for my community so I know what our levels allegedly are). Thanks for your input. I feel silly asking these questions but it is something I never had to contemplate before!

  • We use tap water, we have city water. Never had an issue. I think the only time you'd have to boil it is if you have well water.

  • Never boiled the water. Just a little tip... Dr. Brown's makes a pitcher where you can mix large amounts of formula at once. Then you can refrigerate for 24 hours.

We use bottled water, but more because I won't drink tap water myself, so I'm not going to give it to my baby. We keep it room temp, but also keep a thermos of it hot and when we mix the bottles we add a little hot water to the room temp to warm it up a bit. Good luck, I hope the formula works.

This! I loved this pitcher. We also used our tap water without boiling. We did use a bottle warmer, though.

  • I have a water cooler and use that water, simply because we have well water here and, though it's tested bi annually, I have a weird thing about drinking it, so I'm certainly not giving it to my kids lol... It occasionally smells like sulfur, which is normal and common and not an issue, but because of that I almost never use it.. Not even for cooking lol., but, it have no idea if the water cooler water is flourinated..? Sorry about the neonate.. Did you try Nutramigen? We've had a lot of luck with that, but no luck with alimentum.. And it's not quite as expensive as neonate :-(. I hope this fixes your DDs issues!!!

  • Tap water is fine, we run ours through a filter.  For a newborn I'd use bottled, but after that I don't think it matters.

  • I see I'm late but boiled water?!  What?!  I've never heard of this.  I didn't have time to read previous responses, but @martinimomma, we kept a Brita on our counter (so the water was room temperature) and just periodically refilled it throughout the day.  Ta-da!  Filtered water.  Saved us a fortune (buying one Brita versus tons of nursery water).

  • We are on a well but the ped said that was fine--no boiling necessary. DD, however , has different ideas and will not drink powdered formula, only RTF. :(
