Belly sleepers

Alright so I know this has been asked but I don't remember the responses. How long are LOs supposed to sleep on their backs? I think Ive heard once they can roll over its fine but I can't help but freak out whenever I wake up and LO is on his belly...I just feel like he could block his airways and suffocate. Our other issue is he rolls himself over so often and night and half the time wakes up crying acting like he is stuck, even though I know he can roll both ways. What do you all do about this?

Let him sleep however he wants to sleep. If they are strong enough to roll on their own, leave them be.

This.. We also found that dd was having a hard time self soothing on her belly because she wasn't used to it so we put her on a blanket on the ground or on her play mats a lot during the day and let her get used to it
  • He tends to roll all around in the crib, but generally he sleeps the best on his belly. It made me nervous when he first did it, and I would go in there and flip him on his back, and he would get really upset. I finally just decided to let him roll onto his belly, and watch every breath on the monitor, and he slept great. I haven't touched him since then. He also has the ability to roll onto his back, so I'm not worried.

DS is an official belly sleeper. I worried at first and still feel a little nervous but I'm powerless unless I want to hold him all night (I don't).

Married my love 8-25-12 TTC #1 September 2012. BFP 2-2-13. DS born 10-16-13.
TTC #2 in December 2014. BFP 12-31-14. Expecting a September baby!
  • DS was on his tummy when I went in this morning. I texted a pic to DH and he said that he also found him on his tummy at 1am when he gave him a bottle. He has been a side sleeper ever since we stopped swaddling but it looks like that might be changing! On another note, his sleep sack was on inside out. No idea how DH zipped him in there and didn't notice the zipper was on the inside!

  • same here, LO sleeps on her side or her belly, and she's only started sleeping through the night once she's been in these positions so it's defintely what she prefers. If they can get to the position themselves, it's safe for them to sleep in it, IMO.

  • Lately I've been putting him down on his belly.  Chances are he will adjust for a few seconds until comfy.  If I don't, he will roll around until he's on his belly and comfy.  This could take him a few minutes and he may or may not end up in the corner of his bed trying to get comfy.
