Eating Less

I feel like I saw a post about this recently but now I can't find it.

My LO is 10.5 weeks old and for the past couple of days, he seems to be eating a lot less.  He used to drink around 3.5 oz every 3 hours and now it seems like all he wants is 2 oz.  He doesn't seem sick or anything.  He just doesn't want to eat after half the bottle is done.

I called my pedi who basically said that I could come in if I wanted or just keep an eye on it for a while.
Anyone else going through this?

I'd say wait it out a day or two and see if it continues and/or if he develops any other symptoms.  I know with all my kids there have been days where they want to eat/nurse more or less.

  • My LO is also 10.5 weeks- he usually eats 4.5-5 oz every 3.5 to 4 hours. Here lately there have been several times where he will only want 3-3.5 oz. Last night he only took 3.5 oz and slept for almost 7 hours. He is also not sick, is very happy, etc. I believe my LO is exhausted from routine change. He started daycare last week and is still adjusting. He falls asleep shortly after the bottle, so I think at this point sleep is more important to him than eating. Has your LO had any changes in his world recently?
  • My girl has had a smaller appetite the past two days. She's normally a very good eater and interested in topping off every time I offer her my breast. Did not discuss with the pedi-but did speak with a friend who has a 5-month old. She said her daughterhad days where she was eating less-totally normal.

The overnight thing just happened to us too last night.  I was sure that he would be very hungry after sleeping 6.5 hours (!!!) but he just wanted 2 oz.  He did manage to drink 3 this morning after I posted this, but that was during the span of an hour.

Nope, no big changes lately, though we are starting daycare on Monday.

Maybe it's just something that happens around this age.. I wouldn't be worried about your LO at this point. I don't know how many hours a day he will be going to daycare, but just be prepared for him to act quite different the first week! Mine goes 9 hours. We have a schedule at home and quite nap times, etc. Daycare rocked my LOs world. He usually sleeps about half of the day, but each day at daycare he would only sleep a combined total of 1.5 hours because of all of the stimulation and noise. He still ate a normal amount, but would pass out after at home. This second week is almost over and he is back to normal. So, as far as the eating goes, you probably won't be able to gauge his new "normal" for another week or so.
Are you able to weigh him anywhere? Our hospital offers weigh ins every Friday night, so that's how we keep an eye on LOs weight, especially if he has had a week where I don't feel he is very hungry. He is always gaining steadily, so there is never anything to be worried about, but as a FTM, I'm a spazz.

  • Give it a couple days- DS has done this and it stopped just as quickly and mysteriously as it started.
