So 'fess up ... anyone else scoping out diaper bags??

I know I shouldn't, I know I'm bad, I know anything can happen ... but I couldn't resist a sneaky peek or two at the mall.

I'd LOVE to get this MbyMJ, but IDK if I can justify the $300 price tag.

I also like this Skip Hop:

And this Timi and Leslie, which looks like the MbyMJ but doesn't have a zip (and purple is unisex, right? Right?):

Re: So 'fess up ... anyone else scoping out diaper bags??

  • I've been scoping them out too! I think I'm going to go with a Vera Bradley.
  • Loading the player...
  • I have 2 already and I have been looking at new ones. I want one that can be worn as a book bag. I could never spend $300 on a diaper bag. They get baby spit up, food, and Cheerios mushed in them.

I have a JJ Cole Satchel that I like a lot. My friend has that Skip Hop linked above and she really likes it too.

  • Exactly @meagpt22 !!!

I also want my bag to be LIGHT ... I'm the world's worst overpacker (you would not believe what I can get into a Travelpro suitcase), so I need to compensate.

  • Already got mine! I saw it online, then found it on clearance at a local discount store. Score :)

  • With my first I got a cheap one and it broke after a few months. With my second I got a nicer one that matched his car seat. It's still in decent condition. This time I am going to get an organizing utility tote from thirty-one gifts. I will still need to carry little things for #2 and everything for #3, plus I use it as my purse so I want something big enough for everything. I typically carry a lot in my diaper bag (and let's be honest my purse too) so I need something big.
  • I really like the Coach diaper bag on the coachfactory website. Not sure how practical that is though ;)

  • I bought one before we even started trying! It's a Vera Bradley and is convertible from a shoulder carrier, messenger bag, or can be a backpack. I can't wait to use it! I wanted something not huge so that Carrying it around doesn't get exhausting. I think I will just stock some storage bins to keep in the car as well and keep backup stashes of diapers and clothes.

  • I had the Timi&Leslie Charlie bag with my son and LOVED it.  I wanted a bag that would be fashionable since I would be carrying that thing everywhere.  I spend some cash on my normal bags so why not this one?!  The only thing I loved a little less about my T&L was the weight.  You ladies are right - the leather was a little heavy once filled with all the babe's goodies.

I am totally a diaperbag-a-holic!  I have about 5 of them kicking around the house :)  I have the skiphop bag that was linked above, and I like it, but it's certainly not my fav.  By the time I get everything for my kids in it, there is no room for my wallet and keys, so I end up with another bag.  It was ok when I just had DS#1, but still not my fav.

I am a Ju-Ju-Be fan.  Especially when they go on sale!  These are my two favourite bags:  Ju-Ju-Be Behave or the BFF.  The Behave is what I carry most often for errands or when I'm only out for a couple of hours (which is most often the case), but the BFF is nice for day trips or the NB stage when you simply carry a whole lot more!

I tend to keep an emergency kit (with extra clothes, diapers, wipes, blankets and all the other stuff that I don't need on a routine trip) in the car.  I've never needed a change of clothes in the middle of the grocery store, so I don't want to carry more than I already do.  That's why I like the Behave, it looks like a large-ish purse, I can put my stuff, snacks, sippies, a couple of diapers in each size, wipes and a couple small toys in it, and it isn't bursting at the seams.  It's really all I need to run errands.

Edit:  Oh, and @NYGWildCat purple is totally a neutral colour!  My stroller is purple even though I have 2 boys.  Besides, the bag is really for you!  Get the colour you want :)

  • I picked mine based on recommendations on here (and I'm on a tablet so I can't find where to link you, but it's at Target). I got it based on whether or not my husband would carry it. I need no puppies or kittens on my diaper bag. Although, my husband suggested a backpack, which I think is also practical.

  • I am also guilty…I have been scouting out a few online, haven't purchased anything yet though.

  • I'm a self admitted diaper bag whore. My everyday bags are the classic Coach diaper bag and a black microfiber Vera Bradley diaper bag. My travel/long day bag is the Petunia Pickle Bottom Abundance Boxy Backpack. My needs to be compact (like thrown in the stroller basket) is a large Lonchamp tote. DH also has the Diaper Dude- he's used it once, a backpack would do.

I agree with @JJsMum‌ about JJB. I use their Behave as my everyday purse and also have one of their wallets. The organization of a JJB brings me a sense of inner peace. :) I also have a skip hop bag and a petunia pickle bottom but think that JJB has both companies beat from a well thought out design perspective.

I showed this one from Land of Nod to DH kind of jokingly like "Oh I'd love one LIKE this, but cheaper" and he keeps asking me why I haven't ordered it yet and told me that I should get it.

  • Already bought mine! Using it to store small purchases I'm accumulating.
  • My hubby surprised me yesterday and brought home a Coach diaper bag for me! I'd been looking for months (even before we got pregnant) but all the local stores had stopped selling them and I don't like their newest design that they offer on their website.

He was out of town and found some - didn't know which color I'd prefer - so he bought one of each and we just returned the extras today!
  • With my first I got a cheap one and it broke after a few months. With my second I got a nicer one that matched his car seat. It's still in decent condition. This time I am going to get an organizing utility tote from thirty-one gifts. I typically carry a lot in my diaper bag (and let's be honest my purse too) so I need something big.

I just received my Thirty-One bag! They just recently came out with the Zip Top Organizing tote which is only $5 more than the regular but it has a zipper! I love that it has all the pockets on the outside but inside is just one big pocket. I used to have a bag with lots if pockets but I never kept it organized and it was more of a pain having to look everywhere for something. I also love that it wipes clean. I also got the thermal bottle carrier and a small thermal bag in the matching design. This is the design I got.

I'd LOVE to get this MbyMJ, but IDK if I can justify the $300 price tag.

I coveted the Marc Jacobs bag my entire pregnancy with DD, and could never justify it.  In the end we went with a plain black Skip Hop (below) and I am very happy with it.  The very best part about it is that it looks like a black laptop bag so DH never had an issue carrying it. If I had gotten a feminine one I would always have been stuck carrying it.

I appear to be in the minority, but I've never understood the compulsion to have a really fancy diaper bag.
With DD, I let DH pick the diaper bag because I'll carry anything, and he won't.  We have a DiaperDude messenger bag with skulls on it.

ETA: I do have a JuJuBe wristlet diaper bag that I used once I only needed to carry diapers and wipes and not all the other crap.  It easily fits a couple of diapers, a thin pack of wipes, my wallet, a pouch or snack and some crayons.  It now lives in the back of my car with an extra pair of pants, undies and socks for DD, in case of an accident while we're out.

  • I would love to buy an expensive bag but seriously they don't last long enough.  I pick up or reuse large purses/totes that I have around, switching them out every 6 months or so.  Right now i'm using a silver/black Nine West tote bag that looks great and I found it for about $40 at Ross.

  • I have never used a bag that intended to be a diaper bag. Always cute tote bags - whether cheap or expensive. And I'm pretty good about keeping things contained in a way that avoids leaks, spills, etc. but I figure a good cheerio or two would get crushed in the bottom whether I had kids or not. :)
  • I totally don't need a new one since I have like 4 or 5 still in great condition.  I would love the chervon print skip hop though.

  • I was considering Thirty-One. I'm in love with their bags. They're well-made and inexpensive. There's actually one on sale this month only for like $25. It's cute, but I'm on a work computer and it sucks so every time I bring up the website, it crashes IE.

  • I bought this Coach diaper bag as a laptop bag for work a few years ago... Since then I work at a job where we don't have laptops so it just sits in the closet. We will use this as a diaper bag- it's got tons of compartments, is pretty roomy, and it's black and grey so gender-neutral. It cost around $150 at the Coach Factory Store in like 2011.
Bonus: WHEN it gets destroyed by baby food/spilled milk/whatever random mess happens, I won't be devastated at all, because it's already a couple years old and not "new" anymore.

I don't think it's as high as 20% off. When I had DS in 2012, it was 10% off at Amazon and 10%-15% off at BBB and BRU. The discount is only worth it on exclusions (like Baby Jogger and I think Medela at one of those stores) but for everything else, I just used regular coupons.

Okay, so 15%...  Still a discount!  I think the name brand bags are exclusions on the reg coupons as well.  Plus the registry completion coupon is a discount on the entire purchase, not just one item.

I just got a Kelly Moore camera bag that's got an awesome padded basket thing w/ compartments that can be removed.  I'm hoping to use that this time too.

  • There's a black one at Vera Bradley I've been eyeballing. One of my friends has it and loves it. Plus, DH would probably be more apt to carry it if it isn't all womanish. We don't know what we're having yet, but some boy diaper bags can be kind of feminine, I think, because they're aimed more at women ... if that makes sense? :-P

Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a downer. I had most of the essentials purchased either through 20% off coupons or through my shower. When it came time to use the completion coupon, I decided to just hold off and purchase any remaining items using $5 off $15 coupons or 20% off coupons as I get them. (I also have both BBB and BRU near me so I can use Bed, Bath, and Beyond coupons at both).

It is much easier to just use the completion coupon and get everything all at once though. I'm just super cheap and would rather get things as cheaply as possible even if it's more of a hassle. :)
