Serious Latching Issues....advice needed

My DD is 8 days old. We have had a rough time with breastfeeding. She was born with a tongue tie which we got fixed....but she also has lip tie which we plan to get fixed.

The day she was born, she would not latch. Could not. I also have flat nipples, so I was given a nipple shield. Things got a little better. She had her tongue tie procedure...they got a little better still.

And then the last couple of days, she started biting again. Every time she bites, I unlatch her.. and she goes into hysterics. Does anyone have insight or been here? I have another appointment with my lactation consultant tomorrow...but my nipples have had about all that they can take.

  • I'm sorry this is happening. My LO clamps down, too (he also had tongue tie correction). I also am
Flat/inverted but didn't start having successful transfers until I ditched the shield.

My LC told me that he's still learning and getting frustrated even though my supply is fine and let down is not too fast or too slow. She suggested giving a little expressed milk in a bottle and then BF so he's calm and happy when he starts a nursing session.

Another lady in my bf group has the opposite issue. He LO feeds better when super hungry and bites/pulls as she finishes. Babies! Can't they all just be predictable and consistent?!?

I'm interested to hear what your LC says. Will you post an update after your visit?
Also, ask for APNO, it's medicated ointment for nipples and it is a miracle drug!!

I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • If she's clamping down at the start, it could be the let down is too fast for her to handle. My guy did this too. It helped to express the let down by hand. Also laid back nursing helped. If it's happening after let down, could be she's getting frustrated by the flow being too slow and is having trouble getting the milk out. That issue should resolve with time. Suggest having the lip tie done as soon as you can so she doesn't learn bad habits and to save your nipples! We had my guy's lip and tongue done at the same time (he had a posterior tongue tie as well as the visible one, have them check him for this!). They were both done by a pediatric dentist with a laser, took no more than 10 minutes.

I hope things start to improve!
