Success after IF

LO's noise sensitivities

LO who is 10 months old had developed sensitivities to noises. If a truck rumbles past, a gardener starts up a lawn mower he totally freaks out. No crying if I am near, just sheer panic and he virtually climbs me. BUT... He loves the vacuum. Go figure. I did some googling and saw the word "autism" and freaked myself. Is this something I need to take him to the pedi to address, it is just a stage or should I have some concerns? It has only happened in the last 3-4 weeks. TIA

Re: LO's noise sensitivities

  • No idea on the other loud noises, but I just took a video of J gnawing on the vacuum while I was trying to clean. The vacuum provides an expected repetitious noise. Trucks, balloons, etc are unexpected.

Does he have other autism signs (eye contact, etc)? It might be more ear or personality related. Hugs. It is terrifying to think something might not be 100% with our sweet babies.

  • I have a niece who is four who cries when the blender goes on. Maybe he just has super hearing.

In my own personal life I had a ton of ear infections that when they put tubes in my ear I got very upset at loud noises.

Doesn't hurt to get his hearing checked out.

  • I wouldn't get worried yet, especially if he isn't showing any other signs.  A lot of kids are sensitive to noises, especially ones that are unexpected.  It never hurts to mention it to your pedi if you are concerned.  But step away from Dr. Google -- it will just freak you out.

  • A has done the same thing since she was born. Paper being crunched up used to frighten her. Like your son she has no other symptoms of autism and she is quite talkative for her age. I think it's just startling to her. I am going to call this one as perfectly normal.

  • C went through this. She suddenly became frightened of the food processor when I was making purees, and she was not a huge fan of the blender until she realized it made smoothies. I think it's more of a fear of the unknown, if it's not something they hear often, or can't see coming like the truck outside, it just startles them. I'm sure he is perfect!
