S/o of solids topic

So we have tried BLW on three seperate occasions and each time it seemed that my baby was super eager to shove the food in his mouth and seemed to gag each time. Once he threw up later. Soooo I was all excited about solids until he had that reaction. He will be 6 months Saturday so I know that is usually the starting point or around there but he wants all of our food so we experimented earlier. Anyway...I guess my question is how long did it take for your baby to not gag on food and figure it out. I'm assuming gagging us part of the process but super scary for me.

I've tried BLW 3 times. Pineapple, Pears, and Strawberries. She only gagged once. How big is your spear. I make it just big enough so that there is about 2" bigger than her hand. I may try another food tonight. If your spears are really longer maybe shorten them a little bit. That way he can't gag himself. However, do believe gagging is part of the learning process.

  • gagging should not be part of the process. he probably gagged since he wasn't quite ready---is he sitting up? does he still have tongue thrust? he may act ready (reaching for foods), but that is just curiosity. i would hold off a bit until tongue thrust is gone.

  • Hum, I do purees and she will gag mostly because the flavors are all new to her.

  • @Amjoy25 I came back to this post because I thought "well you probably look like a bitch for love titsing that her baby gags when eating."  To clarify, I liked it because LO does mostly purees as well and has done the same thing when he doesn't like something (green beans in particular).

  • It took him a couple of weeks. He did not gag a lot but he did vomit a little once on avocado. Very soft broccoli, carrots and squash are easy for him. It did take a couple weeks, like I said, but now he seems to have the hang of it.

  • Thanks for the responses...maybe I'll try a purée and see if it is the same. My boyfriend got very scared at the whole gagging to the point where he thought maybe we should rethink this. I read the BLW book and it mentioned gagging vs choking but not in depth.

  • My baby gags a little if it gets too far back. She gags on oatmeal and solids a little. Not always, but just if it hits her reflex. DH always freaks. There was only one time I really worried she was actually choking and we've done this about a month.

  • It's a learning process. She's gagged a couple times (over the course of a month or so). It's important that they learn "food doesn't go this far back" so they don't choke themselves later and learn to chew it first. I think if it happens a lot the baby might just have a sensitive gag reflex, they haven't cognitively figured out cause and effect (a milestone around 23 weeks I think?), or they're just very zealous. I am a huge fan of silicone teethers at first because they hold on and they aren't that deep so they don't choke so they learn how far in food should go. If it's only been three times I would maybe take a break for a couple weeks and then try again or try a teether to help teach how far in food goes in the mouth.
