Pregnant after IF

Sugar test / diabetes possible

I have PCOS and im currently on metformin until week 12. im also currently 320lbs. My OB told me I am to do a low carb diet and walk 30 mins a day. He really doesnt want me to gain any weight. So I did the 1hour sugar test Saturday and my results came back as elevated. The doctor said I need to do the 3hour test. I asked the doctor if the metformin has anything to do with the levels being elevated and he said no. Just the opposite should happen. He said if the 3hour test has elevated levels I will probably have diabetes.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm trying to stay calm and carry on but my IF brain is racing. Any stories would help. Thanks in advance.

Re: Sugar test / diabetes possible

  • Just happened to me at 16 weeks.  I was on metformin for PCOS and borderline blood sugars.  I am also over weight.  When I was 15 weeks that was the first time I saw my OB, prior to that I had seen a midwife.  So he took me off my metformin because he did not want me on it during pregnancy.  Failed the 1 hour and I didn't even get a 3 hour.  Started insulin last Thursday and I have an appointment with a dietician tomorrow.  Worst part is taking my blood sugars 4 times a day!  But so far with just a few small changes to my diet I am always in the ranges I need to be.

At first I googled and was terrified that my baby was going to have issues but my OB reassured me that as long as it's managed everything should be fine.  I also thought I screwed up getting pregnant while overweight.  It's been a week now though and I feel much better!  It will all be worth it when that little baby is here and then I can go back to my metformin or hopefully lose a bunch of weight and kick this to the curb.  The worst part was when he said that this early in pregnancy he wouldn't consider it gestational diabetes but just regular diabetes.  Ugh!

  • I also have PCOS, but I was only slightly overweight pre-pregnancy.  I was on metformin, but as soon as I got a positive beta my RE took me off of it, as they don't truly know how it affects pregnancy since there aren't enough conclusive studies yet.  Once I graduated to my midwife, she said that if I do develop GD I might go back on it, but not before trying to control it with diet.  I had my first glucose 1-hour test at 17w and I passed with flying colors (my level was at 90, and the cutoff is 130, so I wasn't even close).  My second 1-hour test is this weekend, so FX that I still pass!  I haven't been eating all that great this week, but I really haven't gained crazy weight up to this point, so I'm not too worried about it yet, but we'll see.  I'm not sure if this helped you at all or answered your question, but this has been my experience with PCOS, metformin and the glucose test up to this point.

  • Hi, I don't have PCOS nor am I on any medications but I have a family history of diabetes and I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks. I was also not overweight before pregnancy so don't beat yourself up about it, PP!!! I have been able to control it with a few changes to my diet and so far he is not measuring big. There are some scary risks mentioned in the internet but as long as you keep it under control with diet or meds, everything can be okay. I am still nervous about it and some weeks it's harder to control but honestly, it hasn't been that bad.
Also, apparently 50% of the people that fail the 1 hour will pass the 3 hour so don't stress yet! Good luck- not going to lie, I hated the 3 hour test!

  • Thanks ladies. I feel better. Whether I pass the test or not DH & I have decided its time for a change. We are going to make some big lifestyle choices. We have waited so long for this baby we want to do everything we can to make sure he/she is healthy. We also want to make sure we are healthier so we can be better parents. I don't want to be a mom on the sidelines, I want to have the stamina to play with my child doing all the crazy running jumping and playing they tend to do.
