Twin mamas: best shower gift?

Hi!

We have a shower on Saturday and would like to gift a fantastic mom-to-be with a great gift. What do you suggest?  I know I could go to the MOM board, but I like y'all and your perspectives.  :)

TIA!

"Things separate from their stories have no meaning. They are only shapes. Of a certain size and color. A certain weight. When their meaning has become lost to us they no longer have even a name. The story on the other hand can never be lost from its place in the world for it is that place.” ― Cormac McCarthy, The Crossing

Re: Twin mamas: best shower gift?

  • i am a BIG fan of NOT getting matching outfits, unless they are the same but different colors.
this is coming from being a twin... but no twin parents ever agree with me LOL (especially for the really young ones!)

I would love to read the responses from moms who have already had their twins but we are expecting twins and hope to get the following at our shower:
Diapers (even though we plan to mostly cloth diaper, we still want disposables in case we are too overwhelmed to do extra laundry)
    Wipes
    Extra large diaper bag
    Swaddle wraps
    Bath stuff- soaps, shampoos, etc
Moby wraps, k'tans, and/or ergo carriers
    Lots of waterproof lap/bassinet pads

We already have this but have heard its important- my breast friend double nursing pillow.

Our families will hopefully pick up the bigger ticket items (stroller, breast pump, glider/rocker, etc)

    A & K, married 7/1/13.

After 10 months of ttc via medicated IUIs and two early losses, we finally got our boys- Perfect premie twins born 5/27/14.

  • Also don't have our twins yet but if your friend has a dog, she might appreciate you offering to pay for a dog walker once or twice a week for the first few weeks. I can't imagine giving your dog enough attention the first while with new twins at home.
    ****loss discussed*****

We're queer. I'm 33, have severe stage 4 endo, and had both fallopian tubes removed. My love ("Manada" on the boards, 32) was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve. We did Partner IVF (my eggs, her uterus). We lost our twins Tavin and Casey at 21 weeks gestation.

    Our IUIs
with @Manada: IUI# 1-7 (December 2012- September 2013) all BFN. Tried natural, femara, clomid, puregon/follistim, clomid and menopur combo, both the ovidrel and HCG triggers.

    Our IVFs:
IVF #1 my eggs November/December 2013: Cancelled IVF due to poor response

    IVF #2 my eggs/Manada's uterus January/February 2014
BCPs and lupron overlap Stimmed: 1/22-2/2: Bravelle and Menopur (dosage ranged from B300 and M150 to B375 and M150 to B300 and M225)
2/4 retrieved 10 eggs. Endo was much worse than expected. Only 3 eggs fertilized; February 7 transferred two day 3 embryos, froze one. All great condition.
    BFP eve of 6dp3dt; Beta 1 (11dp3dt): 110; Beta 2 (13dp3dt): 175; Beta 3 (15dp3dt): 348; Beta 4 (19dp3dt): 2222; Beta 5 (21dp3dt): 4255
    1st ultrasound (3/6  6w 1d): TWINS!!!! Twin A measuring 6w1d with a heartbeat of 118bpm. Twin B measuring 6w0d with a heartbeat of 113bpm.

***July 18, 2014 we lost our beautiful babies at 21 weeks gestation. They were born too early. Tavin Sara T. and Casey Elizabeth T. are beautiful and precious and we will love them and miss them forever.***

    FET #1 December 2014
Intralipid infusion on Dec 10. Transfer of 1 day 3 nine-cell embryo into my uterus on Dec. 19. (acupuncture immediately before and after)
    BFP on Dec. 27; Beta 1 Jan 2 (14dp3dt): 665, Beta 2 Jan 4 (16dp3dt): 1859, Beta 3 Jan 6 (18dp3dt): 4449, Beta 4 Jan 10 (22dp3dt): 12,251.

  • I don't know that we needed anything special for twins - but have 2 of a lot of things (swings/bouncers) did come in handy (though if you talk to 1001 mothers of multiples you'll get 1001 different answers!)

For us it wasn't as much about "stuff" as the inability to feed ourselves/clean our house/sleep. So gift certificates to favorite restuarnts/delivery? Gift card for a house cleaning (or 2)?

  • as H. mentioned, we don't have our babies yet, but here are things I hope we might get from friends...  As you can see I'm pretty big on experience-type gifts.

    - a contribution towards our dog walker or our diaper service:  These are things that would make a huge difference in our lives and ability to stay sane after we have babies.

    - in the same line as above I would love a friend who might offer to come over and help us with our laundry or house cleaning/tidying after we have babies.   Some people might not want that though....

    - gift cards to restaurants that deliver.   I have a feeling we'll be eating a lot of take out!

    - consumables like wipes, breast milk storage bags, waterproof pads.

    - swim accessories and swim diapers (we have a pool in our building, so I hope to get the little ones in it early and often!)

    - Anything on the registry:  In particular breastfeeding/pumping supports, bouncers, carriers, things like that.

One thing I think we'll be good for is clothing.  We already have some hand-me-downs from a friend, and we'll probably get others as we go on, so I don't actually anticipate having a ton of clothes on our "wish list".    But one thing I think I might have is baby snowsuits or something, those seem relatively hard to find in good condition.  Maybe those might be an option if your friend lives somewhere cold?

  • re: diapers though - if you gift them, attach a gift receipt to the box. One of my kids could not wear Huggies due to a rash that he always got when he wore them (didn't develop until 3m or so) and the other could only wear Huggies due to a fit issue. And it is hard to know how long a kid will be in a particular size.

  • Not clothes! Well, maybe as an extra add-on (because they are so damn cute!), but not as the main gift. With twins, there is SO MUCH crap to buy, and when you need two of everything, another newborn outfit is NOT what you need! Definitely try to purchase something off of their registry if you can. Like previous posts have said, all that "boring" stuff like diapers, wipes, and bottles is really what they need. If they have tons of stuff on their list, go for the most useful stuff. We were really hoping to get our bouncers, wraps, car seats, and bottles. One of our favorite things that we got was packs and packs of the Gerber cloth diapers. We use them EVERYWHERE. In addition, we dubbed our last shower a "diaper party" and basically begged for diapers (both disposable and BumGenius AIOs). Contributing to dog-walking, dinners, and diaper services is also a great idea!

  • We don't have a baby and we may or may not be pregnant yet but I want to second the whole "experience" type gifts. When things are overwhelming just having someone to help clean or cook or provide a service of some kind. I would imagine with twins its twice as overwhelming!

Queer coupled and having a BABY with the love of my life! Love my life and wouldn't have it any other way!
