s/o Research Papers - Essay pole.

Do you consider Wikipedia to be a credible source for a research paper?

I'm not talking about sources you find within the Wikipedia article, but the article itself.

Essay pole = you must answer with your own words.  Answers not given in the form of an actual pole.

  • No, it's not a reliable source. It can be a starting point for a paper that could lead to other articles that can be cited.

  • Nope. I used toTA a course at the U that students from all backgrounds and years took, and it was shocking how many people tried to use wiki as a source. Even some 3rd and 4th years. Shocking, I tell you.

  • In a conversation/debate, maybe. Research paper, nope.

  • Nope. We were expressly forbidden from using it as a source in all of my classes.

    NOPE.

If I need to look up quick info just for my own curiosity, I will sometimes use Wiki...but academically?....No.

  • No. Wikipedia didn't exist when I was writing research papers but even if it did it wouldn't have been acceptable.

No. When I was in college, they gave us access to many other (credible ) databases that we could use for research.

  • Nope, and that was an automatic huge deduction for my students if they used Wikipedia as a source,

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

  • Nope. I don't let my students use it.

Remember the time someone on here tried to get TB page on Wikipedia to reflect the mass exodus? Some wiki editor came on and told us that they had thousands of things in their queue and just did what they could. Also that they didn't care about the truth, just citations.

That was SBP on P&CE, now CEP.

I remember that day.  It was glorious.

  • No, but not because it's Wikipedia. A secondary source is almost never okay to cite. I wouldn't cite Encyclopedia Brittanica either.
  • Never! Information is submitted by any idiot who wants to have his say. No credibility whatsoever.

I personally don't.  I use it as a source of other sources.  However, about 2/3 of my grad school professors are ok with it as long as you don't rely on it as a major source.  I've just never been comfortable with that.

  • I was taught that you could use it as a source as long as you have another source that directly backs up what Wikipedia said. Which means the source is worthless because you had to find another one that basically said the same thing.

So no, I don't use it. I use the academic library provided by the school.

  • No.  Not for almost anything.  Even the obviously correct stuff.  Not unless you can confirm credibility throughout modification records.

  • No. It is not a credible source at all. Anyone can add things to a Wikipedia page a la 30 Rock and Jenna learning about janis Joplin on Wikipedia.
  • No. Although all the research I do is legal research so I pretty much only cite to cases or the occasional law review.

Wikipedia wasn't a thing when I was in school.
