Mesh Crib Bumpers

After reading the safety concerns, I decided against a crib bumper.  But - I just found a cute mesh one at Buy Buy Baby, only I'm just not sure if I need this item?  And yes, it allows airflow, but still has ties and she (much later) could potentially still step on it to try to climb out. What's the purpose? Husband wants one bc he says it'll protect her from bumping against crib rails and/or dropping items out of the crib.  I was thinking she'd not bump herself against crib, nor have small items in the crib, so...?   We're obviously first timers... would love to hear thoughts from moms who've been there, or have researched this topic!  Thanks!

Re: Mesh Crib Bumpers

  • We have never used a bumper and never found ourselves wishing we had one.  DS2 got his leg stuck in the slats once when he was around 9 months old but it was easy to slip out and we never had any other issues.  Sure, his pacifiers have fallen out at night but even if they don't we had to go in to help him find it.

We didn't need this until much later, when DD was about 9 months old. And then the issue was that she put her arms and legs through the slats in her sleep, got stuck when she tried to roll over, and would wake up. But I wouldn't put one on until LO can roll over well on his or her own, in their sleep. It won't provide padding from bumps, and they can't really reach the sides to drop stuff out until they can also roll over well. Edited to add: we could only use this a few months before we took it off because she was pulling up and attempting to step up on it. But for a few months it really was helpful. She would get stuck a lot, and we didn't want to disrupt her really great 12 hr a night sleep patterns.
  • I  used crib bumpers/still do.  I have the strings double knotted and I check them each week when I change the crib sheet.  I feel comfortable.   You gotta do what makes you feel comfortable.

  • We never used any type of bumper, and DD bumps her head far more often outside of her crib than she ever has in it.

  • We use the mesh bumpers until they're older then use the regular bumpers. I use it to prevent her head from bumping against the sides. It also keeps her legs from going between the slots. I put the razberry teethers in her crib and it helps keep them from falling out. My older daughter would stand on them and all they did was collapse under her weight. If your child turns out to be a climber they'll climb out with or without bumpers.
  • got a mesh one 2nd hand & never used it. By 6mos, our pedi reccomended removing the bumper if we had one & lowering crib to lowest setting. Was good advice for my daughter who loves to climb & play with coords. You can always hold off & get the bumper later if you feel it is needed when the time comes. Is easy enough to buy later.
