Talk to me about surgery

I'm getting ready for surgery to fix up my mangled tube and endometriosis. I'm pretty sure it will be next Friday. If I can ever get this cycle started I can schedule it. I'll just say my RE's bedside manner could use some work and she is not very comforting or helpful. I'm apprehensive about having surgery at all but apparently it's my only option if I want to move forward. It's laproscopic, outpatient, through the belly button. I guess it's a small surgery but I'm kind of (read, very) nervous about it. Has anyone had this surgery? Can you please tell me how it went for you? TIA.

Re: Talk to me about surgery

  • I have had endometriosis surgery... I was in on a Friday and lounged around all weekend.  I should have probably taken a couple more days.  I was a little 'green' for about a week.  That is when I really started feeling better.   What are you specifically worried about?

  • Thanks @freakyfast I'm mostly worried about anesthesia as stupid as that sounds. Also recovery time and just general anxiety. I'm not real big on people poking around at my insides. But it doesn't sound like the recovery was too terrible for you.

  • Well I will tell you I had a hard time with the gas afterwards... It sat in my chest and made my chest hurt something fierce.  I had to lay straight.  You need to try to fart to get it out.  I know it is SUPER scary especially going 'under'.  But seriously as soon as you have the drugs you remember nothing, until you wake up.  I will tell you that for me waking up was NOT pleasant.  I had a hard time.  I thought I was strapped to the bed and that everything going on around me was bad. But you have to tell yourself that you are ok.
I am sooo sure I didn't help just now, but waking up is hard.  NOW hopefully you will be the complete opposite.

It helps. Knowing the possibilities, even if they are unpleasant helps. I'm sure my husband will enjoy all the farting, lol. Thanks :)

  • You will be fine! I am sure of it.

  • i just had mine last month (emergency lap for ruptured ectopic). three incisions, one through the belly button and then one on each side of that (imagine directly over where your ovaries are.) i was put under, came out feeling fine. sore, percocets did the trick but only needed them for like 2 days at most. felt 90% better by the 1 week mark.

WARNING: they pump a shitload of gas into your belly so they can see your tubes without the organs and tissues covering up the camera lens. before they close you up they try to remove all the air but it's impossible so you will feel bloated and for a few days after the surgery you  will feel pain in your chest/clavicle (esp when sitting)  this is trapped air in your body that will eventually work it's way out. know this going in. i thought something was wrong and luckily a few people said it was the same way for them.

    you will do great.

Jodee37 I am so sorry to hear about your ectopic. That must have been scary. :(

Thank you both for the warning about the gas in the chest. I probably would have thought I was having a heart attack or something.

  • Jodee37. I won't be able to schedule it until I get my period. My RE put me on progesterone to get it going but so far cycle day 38 and period is still MIA....sigh. Very frustrating. What is ts&ps? I'm not familiar with all the abbreviations yet.

  • I've had 3 laparoscopic surgeries for endo. Everything freaky said. Ask for anxiety meds if you think you'll need them and have gas-x on hand! Keep is updated and hugs!

Oh yeah and this just reminded me to ask for nausea medicine if you get sea sick or car sick.

  • @Bananaappeal145 -

Ts&Ps = thoughts and prayers.   (we used that term a lot on my PgAL board) maybe it's a board specific acronym? sorry to confuse you!

  • I agree with everything above. The gas trapped in my chest was really uncomfortable. That lasted a few days. I only needed heavy pain meds for a few days and then ibuprofen did the trick.

The IV motrin was freaking amazing. It didn't make me feel groggy like other pain meds but man did it take the pain away. I hurled in an e-bag on the way home and was scared it would hurt the incisions but didn't feel a thing. Then I got hungry and made myself soup when I got home LOL- the meds helped the pain that much. The 2nd and 3rd days were the worst, I think.

    Best of luck!
