Sticker shock... (momentary vent)

As one of the last moms to deliver, I'm sure there was already a post about the cost of delivery, but O.M.G!! ~$9k just for Garrett and he didn't even have his own room! Then $27k+ for mine.... I know that my insurance is going to cover a large portion, but... And I know that there have been even more expensive stays from this board, so I know that it could have been worse, but I really wasn't expecting to have nearly $40k in bills from 5 days...

  • Loading the player...
  • I've only seen bills from my OB and the pedi. Not looking forward to the hospital bills at all.

  • This was my cheapest at $24k for 5 days RCS. DS was in the nicu and our combined total was nearly 60k

  • My portion was around $25k, DS was $6500 plus his NICU stay was another $11k.

  • Heh. Pre-insurance numbers, obvs.
$70k for my two weeks in high risk perinatal and a c-section.
$200k for a month in the NICU

Oh and a pretty hefty surgery that hasn't happened yet. Thank goodness we have insurance!

  • So I want to preface this by saying I do realize that we have had ovbs significant improvements in our healthcare etc. since this time.... but when my MIL was born, the total bill for the hospital stay for mom/baby was $67.

My H's grandma was meticulous at keeping receipts for everything (including the glue gun she purchased in 1987 that we have).  I should snap a picture of the hospital receipt the next time I'm at MIL's house.

  • Ladies remember to go through your statements with a fine tooth comb. Hospitals are notorious for "accidentally" double billing.

  • God bless the military. I haven't seen a bill and I don't want to.

    This.
Bless ya'll and your bills :(
    DS1 was $28k though
  • Just DS 16 day NICU stay, I'm talking just room & board $226K. His physician charges, not counting his 6+hour surgery was $20K. We haven't received my c-section and stay yet or DS surgery. Thankfully we have good insurance so our responsibility has only been a couple hundred in co-pays. FX that the trend continues when the rest of the statements come.
  • My first baby was 30k. I had an epidural, a forceps delivery with an OB, and needed extended recovery in L&D.
My second and third were delivered by midwife with no drugs and were both under $7k. One was at the same hospital as the first.
    Amazing what a difference!

Hospital Bill was $30K, OB was $7K, anesthesiologist was $1500. We owed about $2K. I thought we had paid all the hospital bills, but then we got another bill saying that the insurance company was disputing some of the charges and that now we owe another $2000. I have no idea what charges they are talking about so I need to call and find out, but I really don't want to deal with it.

    Got some bills today.
Prenatal care & normal vaginal delivery package $4800
    L&D room $2800
    Postpartum stay (2 nights) $4400
    Newborn nursery stay $2400
Plus a bunch of standard labs, supplies and pharmacy charges.
Grand total is over $20,000 for my uncomplicated, quick delivery in the Midwest.
    We pay 20% co-insurance.
  • FYI - don't be afraid to call your hospital and ask for an itemized billing.  We received our bill and it was just basically an overview of the general costs, nothing broken down.  Anyway, your hospital should be able to send you the itemized billing that breaks down everything, like the billing they sent to your health insurance provider.  @dadalou you may need the itemized bill to see what the insurance company is disputing.

  • Forgot to mention the cost of our stay for two days, unmedicated/uncomplicated birth and newborn! Below is before insurance... we also paid our share up front so we got a discount, 10%, I think?

Me >> $5938.00 Hospital + $3250 OB (the OB charge is for the entire PG process inc. delivery)
    LO >> $1720.50
