Eczema?

I took LO to the dermatologist this morning because he has been dealing with eczema for a couple months now. The pedi said that it wasn't eczema, but I knew it was. So, basically she told me to bathe every other day and keep him very moisturized. She also prescribed this lotion called Desonide. With our insurance, it is $58! That is insane.

My SIL said that my niece had the same thing and said it looked the same as LO. She used Shea Moisture wash and VaniCream. She said that it cleared it right up.

I really didn't want to use a steroidal cream on him, I'm thinking that I might just try the other combo and see if that helps.

Anyone have any other advice? Are you dealing with eczema, what do you use?

oatmeal baths- DS has had some eczema this winter, and they have helped a lot. you can buy the packets, but it's cheaper to either grind up rolled oats in the blender until they are a powder, or just buy a bag of oatmeal flour. put a generous cup in the bath. our pedi also suggested using a non-soap cleanser, like cetaphil, which we are also doing. once he is out of the bath, we slather him with lotion or cononut oil.

personally, i would try the steroid cream if it's not responding to anything else. our doctor gave us a little sample and said to use it for a couple of days if there was a really resistant patch.

I have eczema and Jeffrey gets patches of it on the crease of his knees and elbows sometimes. I normally slather him in aquaphor twice daily. If it gets worse, I have used a dab of hydrocortisone cream to clear it up and I have also occasionally used a bit of steroid cream that I use for myself (pedi said it was ok). Good luck!!

If you want to avoid treating symptoms with steroids, I would like in to treating the source of the outbreaks. Have you looked at dairy or other environmental triggers?

I second aquaphor! In the winter we use cetaphil soap (or non-soap?) and then slather him in cetaphil cream lotion. For really bad patches I put a thick layer of aquaphor and then hydrocortisone cream.

DD hasn't had it too bad, but she used to get little patches here and there. We've been using fragrance and dye free shampoo/body wash and lotion every other night. Whenever possible, we use a wet paper towel to wipe her face instead of a baby wipe. We've been able to keep any problems to a minimum with this routine, but if she gets a patch, we'll put a dab of Smith's Rosebud Salve on it, and it's usually gone in a couple days.

Eucerin cream is working for us. Don't get the lotion it doesn't moisturize as good as the cream does. For tough spots I'll use hydrocortisone cream until the rash is clear for 2-3 days but don't use it for more than 2 weeks at a time.

Welcome to my nightmare for the last 15 months. Get Aquaphor. Buy stock in that shit. Give him a bath every day and slather him in Aquaphor immediately afterwards. If it gets really bad, or to prevent it from getting really bad, do the wet pajama treatment: Give him a bath, slather him in Aquaphor, put wet pajamas and socks on him with a pair of dry pajamas over that. Leave him in the wet jammies for 1-2 hours, then change him into dry clothes. You can do this for upwards of two weeks, but it shouldn't take that long to help it start clearing up.
