Talk me down off this ledge

So we just got home from LO's 9 month check up. The doctor mentioned he had a systolic heart murmur and that we would need to see a pediatrician to have it further assessed. We have seen this doctor plus a different pediatrician before (for reflux) and this has never been picked up on. Our doctor told us not to worry but i am a bag of nerves. Anyone else with experience with this? I know it can be innocent but Im one stressed Mama. I wish the pediatrician appointment could be today.

  • Many, many babies have heart murmurs!  DD's was picked up at her 6 month appointment.  She was seen by a pediatric cardiologist and they found one very small hole. They told us that in 95% of cases, the holes close by themselves within 1-3 years.  It is just something to monitor, but truly nothing to stress about.

By DD's 9 month appointment, her regular pediatrician couldn't even hear it.   It will be ok.  Just have it checked out.  :-)

  • Thanks guys! Dr. Google has already gotten me. Thankfully i did read a lot are innocent, but you know your mind always goes to the worst case scenario. @kdc2007‌ its great to know hers healed itself (surgery scares the crap out of me). @wren1212‌ i may definitely take you up on the pm offer when my mind stops racing. I just question how they didn't hear it before now. I read (big mistake) that if they sweat alot when feeding it could be a sign of something more than an innocent murmur. My LO is drenched in sweat on a regular basis, i always assumed he was just a sweaty child? Was this the case for either of your children?

  • My brother had a heart murmur and grew out of it. He's perfectly fine and is now a 35 year old man.

  • Okay after all of the replies I am feeling a bit better. Stressed but better. I will definitely be anxiously awaiting this appointment but i know there could be much worse things to have. Ill keep you guys updated when he has his appointment.

  • I had a heart murmur as a baby, and never needed any medication or treatment of any kind.  Also, when I had heart palpitations when pregnant and we went to the Cardiologist he said I have a heart murmur, but it is very minor.  He explained it as he is a professional so he hears all the slightest changes in heart beat, so it is not something that would need to be treated, but more so for me to be aware that it might have been part of the heart palpation.

@weddinginthecove Like I said, murmurs can come and go and can show up later in life so it probably wasn't present when he was younger and when other docs listened to it - just so you don't assume someone screwed up by not hearing it :)
  • @kelly422‌ I actually love my doctor so that hadn't crossed my mind. He gave me zofran for my HG when that seems to be frowned upon here (he can now do no wrong haha) It was more of a where in the world did this come from moment. Good to know it can just appear though.

  • Seriously - step away from Google!  Sure, it says sweat MIGHT be a bad symptom.  He could also very well be sweaty.  Try not to relate things!  Practically everything you can feel leads you to a bad diagnosis on Google and every medicine to you take has a warning it could kill you.  I hope he's totally fine but don't worry until you have reason to worry :)

  • Thanks everyone. I had a pretty sleepless night last night ( nothing new with my child who suddenly stopped sleeping), so I'm really hoping with some sleep I'll have a clearer head and realize I really shouldn't be worrying this much. Seeing how many of you have been affected with heart murmurs (either your own or your LO) makes me realize it's pretty common and more often than not it's nothing serious and doesn't really effect your life too much. So glad I started posting to this board a month ago, I'm sure without you guys to bounce this off of I would of had myself turned into a nervous wreck. Funny how I was never a nervous person and now with a child any sign of something being wrong with him makes me panic.
