I've pretty much been MIA for 10 days since Isla May was born. I've been too busy staring at my pretty girl and getting adjusted to our new life.
I wanted to post her birth story. I had an induction scheduled for Sunday, March 23rd. This was very special to us, since that day is my late father's birthday, and we were really hoping she would be born that day. Saturday was my and DH's "dating" anniversary, so we were able to celebrate with dinner and a movie. I was sad that I wouldn't get to experience that going into labor/rushing in the hospital surprise, but it was nice to get prepared- we grocery shopped and cleaned the house.
Sunday I woke up, and I had started labor. I was having contractions, but they were not timeable. We got to our room at 7, and the nurse came in. When I had been in L&D for the norovirus a few weeks ago, she was the only nurse I had that I didn't like. I wasn't happy at first. She did a good job, but she didn't have a good bedside manner. Our moms arrived at 8am, and we all got settled in. My doctor was busy, so I was checked (1-2 cm) and given the Cytotec at 9am. I had to be monitored for 1 hour, and I had to pee so bad. I finally got up at 10 and peed.
I think my labor technically started at 10:30. I thought I was having cramps, but I guess that's how my contractions were. They were getting pretty painful, but they were random. DH and I walked the halls for awhile. Walking through them seemed to help. The nurse hooked me back up to the monitors to see my contractions and how the baby was reacting. Throughout the day, the on call doctor seemed a little concerned about her heartrate, but he kept checking it.
At 12:15, my mom came with me, and I went to take a tub. It was great between the contractions, but they were getting worse. My mom walked me back to the room, and I decided to get the epidural. I didn't want to be in pain anymore. At 1:30, I got the epidural, and the nurse said, "OK, you have until 7 to have this baby." For the next 5 minutes, I was FREAKING out! I thought if I didn't have the baby by 7, the epidural would wear off, and I wouldn't get anymore. When the anesthesiologist left the room, I asked why I had to have the baby by 7, and she said, "That's when my shift ends. I thought you knew I was joking." After that, they started me on the Pitocen.
The doctor checked me at 2:30, and I was 4cm. We hung out in the room, and I tried to nap. Shortly later, I noticed that I was having pain again, and I felt sort of wet. DH went to the bathroom, and told the nurse on the way. She came into the room, and said I could only get the epidural tapped off a few times. I was planning to wait until she checked me. My water had broke, and I was 8cm. DH came back, saw all the blood and thought he missed the birth! Lol
At 4:50, they checked me, and I was fully dilated. They were waiting for my doctor, and she wanted me to labor down for an hour. I was shaking like crazy, but I was so excited to meet her. At 5:50, the nurse came in, and I started pushing. I was having the hardest time holding my breath to push. I really thought I was going to pass out or be sick. The first half hour, I wasn't able to push that well. My doctor was awesome, giving massages and helping me to push. DH was the best! I could not have done it without him- he was the best coach I ever could have asked for. And the nurse was good too- in the end she got her wish, and I had the baby at 6:50- exactly I hour of pushing, less than 10 hours after I was induced.
During pushing, the baby's heart rate was dropping, so they had a bunch of nurses from MFM in the room. I knew this, and it made me even more determined. As soon as she was born, she was taken by the nurses. Apparently, she had swallowed a lot of fluid, and she had her stomach pumped. Luckily everything is good. DH was with her the whole time, and my mom was with me. I had a 1st degree tear, not bad at all. Once I got to hold her was the greatest moment of my life. And I love that she was born on her grandpa's birthday.
One of the MFM nurses tried to help me breast feed, but it wasn't working, and their shift was over. My new nurse came in, and she tried, but it wasn't working again. We got to our recovery room at 10. That was considered our first night, and we only had 1 day at the hospital. This was really hard on me, especially since she wasn't nursing. She will latch on, but she won't suck. She just sits there. The nurses were amazing! and really tried to help. I was the LCs in the hospital and saw one at outpatient too. Everyone has been very perplexed by her. At first, I was pumping every time she got a bottle, but it was stressing me out, and I was crying a lot. Apparently, I'm a freak, and I produce a ton of milk, so I have just been pumping 2-3 times a day and getting enough milk for her, so that's our plan right now. Other than that everything has been great!
Here are some photos!
