Breastfeeding

Weaning help please

DD is almost 13 months and I am weaning so I can start IVF again.  At 12 months, we dropped her day time feedings pretty quickly.  She did great with it.  We have been nursing first thing in the morning and just before bed with two 4 ounce bottles of frozen BM during the day.  I am going to drop her morning session first, and we started this morning.  My problem now is that I don't know how much frozen to give.  I gave her 6 ounces this morning and she chugged it (she uses a straw, no sippy or bottle).  She tried to drink from the empty cup for a little bit and then went on her way.  I have never had a supply issue, so I'm wondering if I should give her 8 ounces?  (for months while I was pumping only in the morning after feeding her, I would get 8-10 ounces, which I know is nuts, but she never had any signs of imbalance issues) I have a very decent stash to work with, so she will be on all frozen BM for a little while.  I'll probably try and drop the bedtime feeding in 2-3 weeks. We did BLW and she eats table foods very well and has a straw cup with water throughout the day.

Sorry that got so long! Thank you ladies!

Re: Weaning help please

  • i don't think you need to worry too much about quantity at this point- your LO is over 1 and she is getting most of her nutrition from solid foods. i would give her as much as she will reasonably drink in a sitting, within reason- you don't want to give her so much that she has no appetite for solids. you could also mix a smaller amount of BM (say, 2 oz), with WCM so that if she doesn't finish it, you're not wasting a lot of BM. then you can also stretch out your frozen supply for longer. this Q&A makes some good points about transitioning to WCM that might be useful.
