Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Early potty training reading

I know some people might not agree so if you don't id rather you don't comment on this:) I just don't want the negativity.

Anyways! Ds is 15 months and we got him a potty tonight and after about 15 mins of him sitting on it he peed in it!! Which is so awesome but I'm a ftm so I have no clue what I'm doing. Does anyone know of a book for potty training early that I could read up on?
Thanks!!

Re: Early potty training reading

  • We sat our daughter on the potty starting at 13 months - without potty training seriously. About a month ago (at 21 months) we started Oh Crap Potty Training (Google it - it's an e book with a Facebook group). She's doing great!

Personally, I consider it potty learning. It's not a 3 day boot camp which I think is meant for older children, but a gradual approach that allows you to 'reset' their expectations (ie not to pee or poo in a diaper anymore). The Facebook group is very supportive and helpful as well.

  • I'm impressed that you got your 15 month old to sit on the potty for 15 minutes.

Trust me, I am too! I put paw patrol on the tv and sat him on it watching that and he was good.

Thanks I added their Facebook page!
  • There is a quiz in the No Cry Potty Training Solution for readiness.

I'm not looking for a readiness chart I'm looking for a book to tell me what to do and what not to do.

I'm not looking for a readiness chart I'm looking for a book to tell me what to do and what not to do.

Most books I encountered while trying to PT DS1 really emphasized not pushing too hard if they weren't ready.

And honestly, I found that going with your instincts was better than any book when it came to potty training DS1.  Each kid is different with a different personality and what works for one isn't going to work for another.  We tried many methods with DS1...letting him run around with no bottoms while at home (I just ended up cleaning up accident after accident all day long), putting him in undies and setting a timer to take him every 30 minutes (turned into a battle and he was throwing tantrums while I tried to force him to sit on the potty), letting him take the lead and reminding him to use the potty if he needed to go (I was cleaning up an accident every time he used the bathroom).  We took a break because he wasn't ready and then one day, DH took him in the bathroom and told him that big boys used the potty and it just clicked.  We had 1 accident that day and none after that.

Good luck OP, I hope early potty training works for you!
  • the diaper-free baby is a great book.

like PP said, it's great to get some 2T size undies and let your LO run around, and point out to them when they are peeing so they start to recognize the feeling. you can also sit them on the potty in the morning or evening to see if they go. also let your LO watch you on the toilet.

we actually did some elimination communication with DS when he was really little, but he got very resistant to the potty when he was able to stand up on his own. now we are just doing what i described above, and waiting until he shows more interest.
  • Well if this is my post then I think I have the right to say that I don't want the negative comments all I was asking for was book advice, thanks tho.

So far so good, he's been on the potty 3 times since last night and has peed twice in the potty, so far so good!!
  • I didn't find any potty training books helpful.  There are lots of books and opinions out there but a lot of them are contradicting.  I just followed DDs lead and went from there.  Also, I took advice from fellow moms which is actually incredibly beneficial if you allow it to be.

There are no potty training books that advise sitting your 15 month old on a potty for 15 minutes with a TV show on.  So pretty much any book should be helpful for you.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

I research everything. But, in this circumstance I have very much appreciated other moms' advice. It's hard when so much information is contradicting. I recently just posted to the 24+ board about potty training. DS totally took me by surprise. I was going to start this summer but he decided he was no longer going to pee in his diaper. He was going very long and then when I would start to change him he would pee on the floor. He has had some accidents in his big boy underwear but I think he is doing well. I know he can hold it for 4 hours because he was in his diaper but I want him to vocalise when he has to go.

I would read as many books as you can and take the pieces out that you think will work for you and your child. It's okay to do research but I don't think one set "plan" is going to work for everyone.

    Thanks this helped a lot:)
  • I personally don't see anything wrong with PT at this age- my current 15 month old is PT (she's not dependable for nightime yet).  My 2 other kids were fully PT (daytime, naps and bedtime) at 15 & 17 months old.  I never read any PT books, I just followed my kids lead (they were dry for 1 1/2- 2 hours at time, hated to be wet, told us when they were wet) and thought they were at the age where they should learn this milestone.  For us, we always had an open door policy for the bathroom so when they could crawl they usually followed us in there.  Because we CD, they got use to seeing us dump their poop in the toilet.  We would notify them when changing their diapers if it was pee/poop.  When they were @13 we would sit them on it after they woke up from their nap and it was very easy for them to get use to releasing on the potty.  Soon afterwards we just went cold turkey without diapers.  With all my kids it took just a few days and was very easy.  My current baby only had 1 pure accident of peeing on the floor.  We let her be naked for 3 days and reminded her where pee and poop went.  Only took her prior to nap and bedtime.  After that we put her in underwear (we found boys underwear fits more snug then girls as does character underwear- DD is 18lbs but the smallest we ever found was 2T- they are big but we roll them up) and reminded her to stay dry and where pee & poop go.
