Hooooly crap. I was breastfeeding F today and he started choking. This happens every now and then and when it does, I sit him up, lift up his arms to open up his lungs, and he coughs it out. This time, he kept coughing and gasping for air. I almost shat my pants!
I did everything I knew how to do to help him, and called 911 at the same time. I was shaking uncontrollably and started crying while telling the operator where I lived and what was going on!
I knew he would be okay, because he would start crying, and then cough/gasp for air and then start crying again. I knew that if he was crying, he was good.
When the ambulance came, he was fine and just screaming partly because I think I freaked him out with hitting his back, and partly because he was hungry. They checked his lungs and said everything looked good.
It was the scariest moment of my life! Panic, fear, helplessness. I was still shaking for a good while after the ambulance guys had left. If this never happens again, that would be just fine.
Has anyone else had to call 911 for their babes?
Re: First 911 Call
We haven't had to call 911 with this LO but when DD was about a year old and her fever syndrome had just started we had to call 911 because she was running 105.5 and was very lethargic. We couldn't get the fever to break no matter what we did and after our 3rd call to the pediatrician they said to call 911 to get her to the hospital quick. The ambulance came and literally just yanked the carseat out of my car and strapped it to a stretcher and then put ice packs on her and a fan for the ride to the hospital. It was one of the worst days of my life.

Our biggest scare is similar to what @dreamingmommy4 said. B used to choke when I tried to give her the liquid vitamin D drops and one day she choked so badly my DH and I were freaking out hitting her back and then tossed the bottle right into the trash.
I immediately went online and bought the one drop ones - much better!
My DH and I got a quick training in infant CPR during our childbirth class and I used to be a lifeguard so I remembered most if what to do- just thankful we haven't had to use those skills.
This. I keep going over what to do with DH because he remembers all that stuff and I can't remember! Even if I've commited it to memory, I'm pretty sure when panicked I'll forget. Thank god we haven't had anything like this happen as of yet.
Sorry this happened! Glad LO is okay.
We discovered a much safer way to give her Tylenol now. I was given a little first aid type kit for a baby shower gift and it has this little medicine dispenser that has a nipple on it. So we measure out the medicine in the syringe, stick that nipple in her mouth and inject the medicine into the nipple and she sucks it right down without even thinking about it. So much less stressful for all of us!
