Pumping at work question

My LO is not on an eating schedule so I'm just pumping every 2-3 hours at work depending on how busy we are (pharmacy). Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm wondering how important it is to pump when baby is eating or if this schedule will be ok long term? Today is only my 3rd day back.

ideally you should pump to replace each feeding you are missing when away from your LO, but sometimes that is hard to calculate if your LO is more of a snacker. what you're doing sounds fine, though. when i went back to work, my DS was 12 weeks old. i was gone from 9:30-6:30 and pumped 3 times a day. when he was more established on solids at around 7-8 months, i cut back to 2 pumps per day, and then to 1 per day at a year, and stopped at 14 months. you will get the hang of it after a couple of weeks. if you are not pumping as many ounces as your LO is eating, you can add in a pump before you leave the house in the morning or after your LO goes to sleep.

  • I have always just tried to make sure I pump the volume in the day that DS eats that day.

This. DS took four bottles each day, but I only pumped three times a day.
  • Thanks ladies. Yesterday I pumped enough for today plus a little extra. So
Hopefully that continues! I was worried because I only got to pump twice yesterday and he ate 3 or 4 times, but I still got enough pumped while at work then pumped again after I fed him when I first got home.
  • With my job, I could never pump as much as she ate, so I aimed to match the volume. I would pump every three hours, giving me four sessions in my 12 hour shift, with one of them being first thing in the morning just before I started work.
