torticollis

So a few weeks ago I noticed lo will only turn his head one way, and in the car seat he lays his head to where his ear is where his neck should be.

I spoke to our pediatrician's sub about it and she showed me exercises we could do. I have been doing them multiple times per day, but he is struggling to turn on his own.

Today during our 2m checkup we were told by the actual pedi that he needs to see a PT.

Anyone got any experience? The pedi sub said there was really nothing they could do at PT we couldn't do at home.

Share with me. This is new I didn't go t hrough this thankfully with DS1

I don't know all the details, but my best friend's son had this.  He did go to PT, but they also had to do the exercise at home a couple of times a day.  He was around 8 months when the PT and pedi agreed that it was resolved completely.

My ds1 had plagiocephaly and torticollos. Be diligent about the exercises and hold him on the side he doesn't favor. The torticollos greatly improved when we did this.

  • So far we do not have any flat spots, and I really didn't think about them. I am fixing to do some research.

my niece had torticollis. she went to PT and my sister said it was fun - they bounced on balls and did things like that. she said the stretches would make LO cry but she kept up with it and saw a major improvement. PT was in a class with other babies but she had to do the stretches that she learned there at home. her LO had a flat spot but it wasn't bad and got much better after PT/stretching. sometimes the therapists came to her house for individual visits too!

ETA: her LO cried because her neck was so tight and it was uncomfortable. the stretches were short so it was manageable and as her muscles loosened, she didn't cry any more.

  • Our doc didn't say anything about PT, but he said DS does have a little flat spot on one side. It's especially common in preemies. He just told us to lay him facing the other direction half the time.

  • This is how I find him always, even more so in the carseat. I have turned his head several times already and he keeps turning it back.

  • DS had torticollis and plagiocephaly. We didn't realize it until he was 4 months old. He was balding in one spot on the back and right side of his head, and the right side of his head had gotten pretty flat. We went to PT with him and it really helped. We had exercises to do at home as well, which we did daily. Like @clb2196 said, it's important to continue even if LO gets fussy while you are doing it.

Some of the tips our PT told us were to lay him differently in the crib each time so that he would have to turn his head the other way to see into the room, and to do the same in the bathtub (these might not apply since DS was a little older). If LO likes to look in the mirror, place it on different sides of his head while laying on the floor to try to encourage him to turn his head the other way - same with a toy that plays music or lights up. Anything to catch his attention and get him to turn his head the other way.

  • We also used this product made by Boppy called the Noggin Nest. You can use it in the swing, bouncy seat, or stroller (not the car seat!) to help with head position. We loved it for DS and I've kept it for DD, just in case ;)
