Tub or Shower - NPR

We had a guy come out today to look into doing some bathroom repairs for us.  It looks like our old tub is going to have to go, which raises the question: Do we want to replace with another tub, or do a walk in shower instead?  Since I am terrible at making decisions, especially while sitting in my office instead of standing in Lowes where the choices are physically in front of me, I decided that I would see what knowledge Parenting can bestow on me!

So, what do you prefer, shower or tub?  Have you switched from one to the other? If so, did you regret your decision?  Did you know that the placement of a donkey's eyes in its head enables it to see all four feet at all times?  Wait, what?

1.  We have 2 bathrooms, both currently with tubs.  The remodel will be on our Master Bath.
2.  We will be doing this on a budget, so looking at Pinterest has only made this worse, since searching for "Walk In Shower" has now made me feel like I NEED a fancy tiled spa shower.

  • Since you have another tub, I'd probably do a shower. Our old place had both (but separately) in the MB, which was nice. I got so used to a shower that now I am terrified I will fall every time I step in/out of a tub. :-\
  • @jsgrl613, I have no idea about the donkeys.  I saw it on a random fact list.  I hope it is true though, because that is pretty awesome.

I usually take showers, haven't taken a bath in a very long time, but I am so scared that if I didn't have the option of the bathtub, that I would suddenly want to take baths every night.

  • Well we only have a shower in our master now and I really wish we had a tub.  I don't take baths often, but I do like to occasionally, and can't since our only tub is in the kids' bath and it shares walls with both of their rooms and they are light sleepers who would wake if the water got turned on.
But I'd only want a large soaking tub in the master, if you can't get a big tub then I'd go walk in shower
I would face the same problem with taking a bath in DD's bathroom as far as the sound of the water possibly waking her up.  I hadn't thought about that.

  • Do you plan to ever sell this home? If yes, I'd try to find a way to do both a shower and a soaker tub. Like this:

If not, it depends on if you like baths or not. I'm not much of a bath person, so I'd rather just have a shower with a bench to sit on while standing. (I should also mention that I'm extremely clumsy, so shaving while standing on one leg with the other propped up and not falling over is a big achievement for me.)

  • @kimandhuck, I wish I had the room to do something like that!  The place where the current shower/tub combo is will be where the new walk-in or new shower/tub combo will be.

  • I personally really wish there was a walk-in shower that could also fill up with water a little like a bath.  I seriously want someone to invent this!  I don't know what to tell you because I'd be torn on this too.  The thing I like better about a walk-in shower (which is what we have now) is that it accommodates 2 people easily, but I'm also really lazy & like the option to sit down in the water during my shower, which works better in a bath.
  • @jsgrl613, after a few Google searches about the Donkey, I haven't seen a good explanation as to how they can see all 4 feet, but I did see the random fact listed on a zoo's page, so maybe there is some truth to it.  Looks like this zoo is in NY.

  • I seem to think that changing from a tub and a shower to just a shower devalues that bathroom from a full to 3/4.  So you'd have a 3/1.75 instead of a 3/2.  Or I could be talking out of my ass.

  • We only have a shower here. The people we bought the house from were older and took the tub out. I thought it was weird at first, but i love it. I would do a shower.

I didn't think the term 3/4 was still used. 1/2 is just toilet and sink, but I think toilet, sink, and bath and/or shower is now considered a full bath.

This is just from looking at online house listings. Many master baths tend to only have a shower and they are counted as full bathrooms in the listing. Any realtors around that can say if resale value would be impacted?

  • My vote is for a garden tub if you have the space.
