When to stop caffeine?

I've been drinking 1-2 cups of coffee occasionally since 2nd trimester... I've heard stopping during the 3rd is important to give baby time to ween off of it as well.  Any thoughts as to when is best to quit cold turkey?  I'm 32 weeks now, due 5/29.

Thanks ladies!

I don't know.  I think it is probably ok until the end in moderation. Maybe if they are crashing from your coffee addiction they will sleep more after birth.

When do you think I should wean my baby off of methamphetamines? I've already cut out the crack.
You act as if crack is whack. Wtf??!!

Crack is whack. I stick to meth and booze.

I know! I thought this one was a joke but her join date is Jan 28th so it might actually be legit.

OP, if this is a serious question,
Why would you wean? There's nothing wrong with 1-2 cups of coffee. If it's because of breastfeeding, that's not necessary. You can still drink coffee while BFing, you just may have to time it carefully. The exception may be if your baby has reflux issues. Otherwise, just enjoy your coffee.

  • My MD said it is safe to drink but try to keep it to <200mg/day
I have at least 1-2 cups a day and have since I found out I was pregnant.

....no, sorry. The words just don't go together for me.

But seriously. How would you like...live?

(I'm married to my nespresso machine)

THIS!  I LOVE my Nespresso machine!
I actually got it for my DH two Christmases ago, but he hardly uses it anymore, so I claimed it!

I need to get more chocolate for mochas...

I ordered another 5 sleeves today. My boss was like "you know they do cheaper brands at the grocery store?". Bitch, please. George Clooney will never come over for coffee if he finds out I use knock offs.

My nespresso machine is what gets me out of bed in the morning.

This may be a dumb question but reading this made me think of it. How soon after delivery (if all goes well) will I be able to eat?
  • I gave up my caramel macchiatos in first trimester cuz they made me queasy, but started working them back in later in 2nd trimester. Now I have 1 a day (12 oz) Mmmmmmm

Oh how I miss those! That is my favourite thing at Starbucks. Even their smallest size is too much for me now, though, so I've been holding off. Can't wait to be able to have them again!

The tall is 75mg, which is well under the 200 mg daily max. Indulge yourself. :)

  • Totally not an April Fools joke!! I've had several coworkers say things like, "Better slow down on your caffeine or else baby will be born addicted and have trouble sleeping." I'm a FTM so naturally everything worries me. Just wanted to hear some perspective from others!!

It's not the 200 mg, it's the actual amount of coffee. I couldn't handle any coffee until part of the way through 2nd tri and even when I did start drinking it again regularly, I found that even my usual 4-ish oz morning cup was too much for my stomach. I can manage up to that amount most mornings and half a can of Coke later in the day. The tall CM would give me some fierce stomach cramps if I tried to drink it all :(

Yeah...no. I'm an FTM too, but I know this is not true. The baby won't be born addicted. Sleeping trouble is possible, if you drink coffee immediately before breastfeeding. That's why we said above that you can still do it, just time it carefully around the feeding routine.

Depends on your delivery but I was eating a turkey sandwich an hour after my son was born.....

I stopped cold turkey in the first trimester (and I was a FIEND) because it suddenly grossed me out and the smell was nauseating. I was one of my first subtle signs actually. Then around oh 16 weeks or so I was able to add some in to the tube of 1 cup a day or at most 2 shots of espresso but now even a shot of espresso is causing weird caffeine reactions so back to decaf I go. I love the taste of coffee though so I like my iced decafs...mmm...especially with a caramel drizzle and almond milk now. But none of this really had to do with a. Fear of peanut being addicted to caffeine...1-2 cups isn't blowing anyone out of the water (says someone who drank a pot a day pp)

  • I weened myself off of caffeen before I got pregnant. It was not fun, and I don't recommend it now, unless your Dr. told you to. My dr and all the research shows one to two glasses a day will not hurt you or baby.

They fed me immediately after giving birth: sandwich, yogurt, apple, granola bar. Sandwich was yummy. I think they also served me tea the next morning.

English or southern style? My brain is stuck on a "wouldn't that be lovely" loop picturing nurses rolling in a tea cart with tea and sweets.... But the reality is probably closer to iced tea with breakfast.

I had a cesarean, so I had to pass gas before I was allowed to eat. Usually 5-6 hours post surgery.
