need migraine help!

I am going on 7 days of headaches and migraines. So far no relief. I talked to a nurse at my ob and they just told me water which I'm consuming 70 plus oz a day and have been for weeks. Also to take tylenol with caffeine and Benadryl which I have and didn't help at all. They told me I can try ibuprofen since I am in the 2nd trimester if I want but seeing as I am anemic I don't want to try it even though before pregnancy it was been my go to for headaches. Does anybody else have any tips or trick for headache and migraine relief while pregnant?

Re: need migraine help!

  • I have been getting non-stop migraines for a few weeks now. Try paying attention to your salt intake. I find that with increased water intake I also need more salt in my diet and that seems to be helping my migraines. Good luck! (I feel your pain! though I think mine are related to allergies/sinus pressure atm)

I am a frequent migraine sufferer and even took a preventative every day prior to BFP. My Dr. suggested resting in a dark room (obviously), cold packs over my eyes, and if worse comes to worst, pop an Excedrin Migraine Relief and drink a Mt Dew. The two debilitating migraines I've had so far have forced me to take the Excedrin and drink the Mt. Dew, but I must say, it does work!

ETA: I hope you find some relief soon! I know how bad it sucks!

  • i ended up in the ER last night from such a horrible migraine and they gave me phenergan and benadryl combined (have to have a rx for the phenergan though)- it worked, last night at least, but it also knocked me on my ass. otherwise Ive been trying low amounts of caffeine, tylenol, and then dark room with ice pack on my neck.  ER doc said mine are ocular migraines (make me have blind spots etc...) and they are way worse than any migraine I had before pregnant.
  • Have some protein and keep chugging the water.  Ask your doctor if you can take excedrin, which is tylenol, aspirin, and caffeine all in one amazing little pill. My doc ok'd it for me (and it didn't help, but it might help you).

A pre-natal massage and/or lots of stretching.  Try to avoid light.  Stay away from screens (phone, computer, TV), as much as possible.  Avoid processed food and aged cheese... go for a nice walk...

These things are all hit or miss but I get migraines and these are some of the things I try. ALternating warm and cold compresses on the neck and forehead can also help. OH - and try a neti pot!

  • Thank you so much everyone! I am going to email my doctor and see if I can try excedrin while I wait for my appointment. I was on phenergran my last pregnancy on and off. i have a feeling I will most likely be given an RX for it again though I'd rather not use it unless I absolutely needed it.
  • My sister swears putting her hands and feet in warm water then placing a ice pack on her neck at the same time is a life saver. Couldn't hurt to try.
  • I was having the same problem so my obgyn prescribed fioricet to help. Maybe talk to your doctor to see if this is an option?
  • I used to get migraines with aura (the blinding) before pregnancy and went on topamax (miracle worker!!) but it's totally NOT safe while pregnant. So I'm crossing my fingers that they don't come back now. But as far as advice, I always found water (obvious) and a chiropractor helped, when my neck was out of wack I would get a constant headache. Always worth a try!! Hope they go away soon though!

  • The only additional thing (that others haven't mentioned) that helps reduce mine is peppermint lotion or cream applied to temples, back of the neck, etc where there is tension/pain.

  • A trigger point therapy massage may help..it helped when I was having frequent headaches. I have had a few recently and just made an appointment to see a chiropractor to see if that help as well. The first thing I usually do is get in a steamy shower and use lavender essential oil then lay down and put some of the oil on my pillow. It helps a lot sometimes.

  • Go in and ask ur OB for a script for Fioricet. I got one and it's changed my life! I suffered from migraines and tension headaches before baby and Tylenol wasn't even touching my pain!! It's been so great!

  • The migraines are absolutely horrible, so sorry you are going through this :(  I have been taking half of an excedrin migraine like some of the others above.  It helps instantly...it's pretty amazing.  I feel guilty, but when I have the migraines I'm sure I'm releasing a lot of stress hormones into my body which also isn't good.  Good luck!

This could be useless advice, but a pregnant friend of mine told me and I use it too for temporary relief. Mint Oil, rub a drop on your temples it really helps.
