Baby-led weaners (hehe wieners) and finger food feeders, salt question

So DD started out with purées and loved them, then started puffs and Cheerios, then little pieces of fruits and veggies. Now she wants to eat whatever we're eating, so I've been letting her try most stuff if its not spicy. So should I be concerned about salt intake? I know we're not supposed to add salt to baby's food, but is it okay for her to have what we're eating, which most likely is lightly salted? Maybe I'm over thinking this.

  • We've been pretty cautious (family history of allergies, and some minor reactions to certain foods already) so we generally don't give DS much straight from our plates. If we do give him something we try to just cook it somewhat plainly and then add salt at the table. At that same time though I think a little bit of salt and other seasonings (DS loves cinnamon) is fine. Our pediatrician has said almost everything in moderation is okay.
  • I give Tess whatever we are having.  She likes spice and flavor.  I do what the salt content, but don't obsess over it.  Like if I add a little salt and pepper to something that's fine, but like @nkaeding said, I wouldn't give her something with super high sodium like potato chips.

  • Allie eats whatever we are having, but I don't use salt in my cooking and these days we eat pretty clean, so I'm not too worried. She's decided she no longer wants to be fed, if she can't fed it to herself she doesn't want it!!

  • We are not hard core BLW, we are doing some purees too, but these days I am just a fan of trying to offer Caleb a little of what we are eating and letting him feed himself if possible--yesterday I let him lick some TJ's hummus off a cucumber (I didn't check the sodium but it was just a taste).

  • Oliver eats purées still for breakfast, but he also eats whatever we are having for dinner. He has also had a potato chip. GASP. ;)

Thank you all for your insight! It sounds like no one is overly concerned about it, which makes me feel better about letting her eat what we eat.
I don't give two fucks about salt. Lol Alex nommed on a French fry & eats the spiced food we eat.

    Loved your view, @PrimRoseMama‌!!

  • I have stopped cooking with salt (other than a little bit of salt in the pasta water).  We just add it at the table.  I'm sure it's healthier for DH and I as we both love salt.  I do feed her uncured, nitrate free (gasp!) ham every now and then.  She had a few nibbles of bacon (again uncured, nitrate free, gasp!) the other day.   She gave me a what da fuq look. :)  She must want the nitrate kind!

  • I didn't know that.  Thank you. :)  I just did a little bit of reading on it.  We typically buy organic and unprocessed.  I'm going to look into this a little bit further.

  • Ditto PPs. We don't let her have too much processed food, but we don't worry too much about letting her eat what we eat. I've cut back on salting food during prep, and just add it at the table.

  • @simone711- tortilla chips and hard edges are serious choking hazards, take it easy and keep a close eye if you decide to go that route.

@Married071709‌ Its usually not nitrate free but "no nitrates added" which really means they use "natural" ingredients with nitrates. For example, the Hormel brand uncured bacon touts no added nitrates but is made with celery juice powder. The only reason it's in there is because celery juice is FULL of nitrates. It's the "all natural" way to add nitrates. And when they just add a bunch of celery juice you can end up with MORE nitrates overall than just your standard bacon.

@somerandomchick I also didn't know that. When I found out I had GD pretty much the only thing I could eat for breakfast was eggs so on the weekends I indulged in some organic, uncured, "nitrate free" bacon from Fairway since I was getting so sick of the eggs. I think it was Applegate Farms. I think the label must have a little asterisk and say "other than naturally occurring nitrates" in something or other, must be the celery juice.
