fighting sleep

LO fights sleep so bad. He wakes up after being totally asleep after 5-20 minutes. Then he will squirm and make noises just as he is relaxing to keep from falling asleep. He is swaddled, clean diaper, fed, gas drops if nothing else is working, white noise, rocked, etc. He has the same routine each night and will be awake usually and hour and a half or longer when he wakes up after falling asleep. Any advice on how to make bedtime easier and how to help a baby who is fighting sleep?

Is he overtired? What time is bedtime and what are naps in the day like?

Also, what does he do when he wakes? Does he cry? If not crying I would leave him be and see what happens.

DD fights sleep as well and it is supremely frustrating.  It's so obvious how tired she is and she just will not fall asleep.  She had a great week last week, but the last 2 nights have been terrible again. We had been getting her down between 9-9:30 and she was giving us 6-8 hour stretches.  Now she's back to not going down for good until midnight and wakes up after 4-5 hours.

I just started back to work last Thursday, so I'm not sure if that's the culprit and she has to get used to the new routine or if it's just a coincidence.  Whatever it is, I sure hope it's temporary!

  • DS fights sleep like crazy for naps. He's also gone from 2 hour naps down to 45 minutes. I don't know what's going on, but it makes it hard. Once we can get him to sleep at night he sleeps pretty well. I let him fuss in his crib for a few minutes when he wakes up to see if he's really awake, or will go back to sleep (he's a noisy sleeper). I'd like any advice people have too.

  • I do the swing when he fights sleep. But he only fights sleep for naps. I wouldn't do the swing overnight.
  • DD fights sleep like crazy. Last night for instance she had a great nap and great awake time. She ate well and everything was going great. She started to get sleepy so I made sure her diaper was clean, swaddled her, then rocked her like I always do. She would get to the point where she was almost asleep (eyes closing, breathing deeply) and suddenly her eyes pop open and she screams. A few seconds later she calmed down and was awake. She did that 5 or 6 times before finally going to sleep for good. It doesn't happen every night but it happens. All of this happens during the same bedtime routine as always. We are in her room with the light dimmed and the white noise on. She isn't hungry or gassy and her diaper is clean. Every baby is different. Mine just happens to not like to go to sleep. Once she is asleep she will sleep great (7 hours on average at night).
