Blood clot disorders...

So from reading the "cry baby" post I noticed I'm not alone with the blood clotting...
I am just a carrier- dont have the disorder but my dr is making me see a hematologist and anesthesiologist.

Just wanted to know if this is standard and if you have to be seen by additional drs as well?

I was told normally woman have a 1 percent chance of bleeding but I have a 5 percent chance.

Would love to hear your experiences. Oh, I am a
Carrier of factor 11 deficiency otherwise known as hemaphalia

Re: Blood clot disorders...

  • Are you asking about hemophilia?

I don't have direct experience with disorders but do have a friend with a clotting disorder who had a baby 3.5 years ago. I'm not sure exactly which disorder she had but she saw an OB and a hematologist throughout her pregnancy. She had to inject blood thinners every day, so I think her issue is the opposite to yours since she was prone to clots.

Her practitioners wanted her to have an induced labour so that they could keep a close watch on the proceedings. She ended up needing a c-section after the induction failed, which they were afraid of, but it turned out fine. She had no issues with delivery or bleeding/clotting.

  • Hi, I actually have ITP which is a platelet disorder. I have made it 36 weeks (tomorrow) without any really low platelet counts. My EDD is April 30th with CS scheduled for May 1st. I am a FTM and we are not sure if my son will also have ITP. Hopefully not! I post and read both of the April and May boards because of my due date and section date. I have not seen a hematologist during pregnancy because my Doctor did not advise to do so. Sending all positive t&ps to any other blood disorder mamas!

Hiya! I have a protein c deficiency, which is actually the opposite of what you're describing. My blood is thicker and clots more easily than the average person's. But since I don't have a history of clots and I haven't had any of the symptoms of clotting problems (e.g. high blood pressure, swelling, etc.) during this pregnancy, my doc hasn't had me see a hematologist. He's just planning on monitoring it these last few weeks and then putting me on a blood thinner immediately postpartum, since that's when the risk of clotting is highest. How long I stay on the blood thinner will all depend on type of delivery and how the blood tests turn out at that point. ETA my mother was in the hospital with complications from a blood clot after my younger sister was born, so there is a history of birth-related complications in my family. Just not me specifically.

  • Thanks for sharing your experiences! Hemophalia is when the blood doesn't clot and I have never had any extensive bleeding in my life and (knock on wood) the pregnancy is going relatively well so I am very frustrated that they are sending me to all these additional appointments. All the hematologist does is take my blood and my appointment with the anesthesiologist is next week - apparently if I don't go for a consult they can refuse to give me pain medication?

I want to switch providers so badly but it is so late (35 weeks)

  • I wouldn't worry too much about having to meet the anesthesiologist. I do know a few other women who've had to have a consult beforehand for other reasons. They just need to get familiar with your history and discuss how the various meds may affect you/what the risk factors may be for your specific situation. Better to get on the same page with all of that now than have to try to sort it out while you're in the middle of labour and wanting something you may not be able to have.

  • I have itp as well! I recently stRted prednisone at 33 weeks in hopes I can have epidural! They said mine is pregnancy related and it will go back to normal after. Are you scheduling csection bc if your platelets??

I have the lupus anitcoagulant (a misnomer as it actually means I am at risk for clots) and one of the anti-cardiolipin (sp) antibodies positive sort of part of my lupus and I take a baby aspirin every day as I have no had a clot episode yet. It was one of the reasons I absolutely do NOT want a c section as this is my first baby so we don't know how I will respond in terms of that so it's a little scary. I also have low platelets...but so far just mildly. I have not had to see a hematologist as right now my rhummie (for lupus) monitors that and my MFM but I am not sure why an anesthesiologist would factor in unless the concern is about the epidural and possible bleeding in the spinal cord. I know they mentioned if my platelets get any lower I couldn't have an epidural but I don't want one anyways so it was a moot point.
