Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Foody finger food

About how many oz of finger food (for example chopped avocado, chopped cooked veggies etc) does your baby eat in one meal. It was easier to quantify when meals were purées. I'm curious how much other babies are eating. My son is going on 10months and eats what I think is pretty substantial!

Re: Foody finger food

  • I don't measure DDs food.  I give her a variety for dinner (main course, veggies, fruit) and let her eat until she done.

  • same as PP - DS eats basically whatever we do - fcr example - tonight he had a small chicken breast, a large handful of mixed veggies, half of a peach and some pasta
  • I'm curious how much are they actually ingesting? Mine is "eating" a lot, but at least 70% of everything he picks up ends up in the bib or on his shirt / pants. He is 9 months. Is this pretty normal?

  • Totally normal to be wearing most of it.  That's why the saying is "food before one, is just for fun" It's all practice.  By about 1yr they will be effectively eating it and not just wearing it.  They are figuring it all out now for when they HAVE to eat, right now formula or breastmilk is still the primary source of nutrition.

That said, I could always tell what and how much my daughter ate based on diapers.  It usually came out looking much the same as it did when it went in :-)  It wasn't until 11ish months that she was pooping mostly poop and not just food chunks!

  • My son eats A LOT. In one sitting last week he ate an entire avocado, kiwi and half a mango! I think it must have been a growth spurt because he's been sleeping a bit more. I just make a lot of food and he eats until he's done. I also don't put more than 3 things infront of him at a time because then he just gets overwhelmed & starts throwing stuff
  • They are a lot like us as adults.. there are days they will eat so much you wonder where they are putting it all then their are days they just pick at their food.

I don't measure our sons food like others I just feed him till he is done.  I know he is done when he takes his cup or hand and scatters what is left all over his tray and the floor. :)

  • Great feedback! I know how much my son eats based on the containers I prep the food in. He eats between 6-8oz per meal usually and occasionally more. He also drops a good portion on his seat or in his bib but I'm pretty good about catching it and putting it back on his tray :) I would also love to know what foods other babies are enjoying. Any special combos? My son will eat anything I give him I hope it stays this way!!

I wish I could tell you differently but don't get your hopes too high that he'll always eat everything.  There are kids like that, of course, so you might get lucky but I would guess 90% of parents of "good eaters" later find themselves on the 12-24 month board posting "Where did my good eater go?" lol

My kid eats anything we eat.  We just had chicken parm meatballs and pasta the other night that he loved.  He was actually mad that I didn't give him sauce so I then had to give him some while my 4 year old adamantly demanded "no sauce! butter and cheese!"  Don't be afraid of spices.  Not hot stuff but eggs with taco seasoning are a favorite here :)
