Adoption

We have our first foster placement!

We are placed with an adorable boy with some medical issues. He's 8 months old and a peach! We are in love. The hard part is reminding myself daily that he may not be our forever child as reunification is always the goal. For those who have fostered to adopt, how do you cope with the uncertainty? Case workers keep telling me to "protect myself" from heartbreak if and when he is returned to family. My heart does not have an off button.
I always wanted to be a mom, I just didn't know how I would get there.

  • Congrats and I'm looking forward to hearing about your journey!  I think the potential for heartbreak is the most difficult part of the process.  My DH and I talk about it a lot as we are going through the certification process.

  • Congratulations!  Taking care of a foster/adopt child and the uncertainty that comes with it has been one of the toughest parts for me.  One of my fellow foster moms told me something that really helped a lot.  Set small goals for yourself to make an impact on the child's life from court date to court date.  For example, right now we are in a six month waiting period, so I know that we'll have our daughter for the next six months for sure.  She's 10 months old, so in that six month period I can work on teaching her little things like how to clap her hands and I can read with her all the time so she'll start to love books.  For me, doing those things reminds me that I'm making a difference in her life no matter how long she's with us.
