non - caffeine help!

I'm really needing help or suggestions to stay awake during the day without caffeine. I always have one cup in the morning but lately it's been increasing to coffee all morning and one more in the afternoon. I don't drink soda but am so so tired in the afternoon that I can't function without coffee.

Any suggestions? How are you all coping? Eli has been sttn for a few weeks now but my DD2 has been getting up multiple times a night and it's killing me. She's not just awake for a bit either, its for like an hour at a time a few times a night.

Help!

  • Why can't you have a cup of coffee in the afternoon? Bf?

Can you try decaf tea? Or decaf coffee? Can you get some fresh air and have some water? I find that moving around or even working out gives me a little boost of energy.

  • Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'm just trying to cut back on caffeine. I'm still BF (only a few times a day but still) but really just don't want to rely so much on caffeine.

I'll try fruit and cucumbers! I just got some cucumbers over the weekend so that's perfect! Exercise is a sometimes occurrence if I can get around to it and fresh air will have to wait until it's warm enough to actually leave the house. Ugh!!

  • I definitely agree a snack is a good idea, maybe something with a good protein/carb ratio like banana with PB or crackers and cheese so you get your blood sugar up but without a crash. Fresh air always helps too.

  • I have read that water is supposed to be energizing--I like the water with cucumbers idea!  If I were you, maybe just be really strict with the one cup in the morning and then water, water, water the rest of the day? The other day I was thinking of the ladies who have given up coffee--and there is no way I could do it!

  • I just stopped drinking regular coffee. It sucks at first, but once you get used to it, I've found I have more energy.

I do have decaf once in a while.
  • Green tea. Not too much caffeine but it will give you a little boost.

Ok, sorry it took me so long. And DS woke LO as I was laying her down, so I may have to scoot and come back, again.

I was a caffeine addict. I used say I just needed caffeine patch. I didn't think it impacted my sleep or had negative impacts. I had periods were I would give up/cut back and just felt tired. However, over the course of the last 5+ years, 3 pregnancies, and nursing 3 cant-tolerate-any-caffeine-dont-even-dream-of-a-sip,mommy-babies, I have FINALLY cut the cord so to speak. My mom friend with 3 kids exact same ages as mine was just asking how I don't do-coffee (she was all out and in zombie mode) so we just talked about this.

I now know it WAS impacting my sleep. I think I just had so much caffeine in my system that it took forever to detox it all and then forever to re-set my natural sleep patterns. It was also impacting my days. I feel better now without any than I did with no kids and caffeine.

It may not be the best time to quit if you are dependent on it because there is a slump/adjustment period, but when you can, try giving it up.

Ideas to help: stay hydrated. I notice on days when I don't do this, I'm more tired and foggy.

Also make sure you take you multi-vitamin/ have well rounded diet. I can tell when I am slacking in these.

Have small snacks more frequently and bonus if they balance carbs and proteins.

Get moving - a quick walk in fresh air, even if you have to bundle up for just 5 to 10 minutes can make you feel much better. Fresh air is therapeutic.

If you can't get outside try a little dancing around to music, light stretching, or even cleaning that gets you moving around.

A short rest can help even if you aren't able to sleep during it.

Gum or mints helped when I was first kicking my diet coke addiction.

Certain smells/scents are suppose to help with alertness (I used to use that trick during final exams) - mint? Vanilla? I used my vanilla lotion (that they no longer make :(( boo, because it worked for me and my allergies). Pretty sure mint was one of them that are suppose to help. Eta: Citrus! Those are alerting.

GL! I know how very very hard it is and if I think of any others, I'll let you know.
