Cloth Diapering

The monster, yeast

CDing has been great. Until we encpunter a small yeast rash under LOs belly button. Her ped prescribed Nyastin. Should I use a barrier between the CD and the Nyastin? Is Nyastin the way to go or is there a better option? I know is was recommended in a previous thread to use 1/4 cup of bleach, but how often?

Sorry is formatting is off, I'm mobile.

Re: The monster, yeast

  • Yes, either use a liner or sposies.  Not so much because of the nystatin, but because the yeast will get in the diapers.  You'll want to add 1/4 cup bleach every other wash for 2 weeks after the rash disappears.  Keep using nystatin till the rash is gone for 5 days.

If you don't want to use bleach, you can use grapefruit seed extract and tea tree oil, 25 drops each.  Or maybe alternate that with the bleach.

If you use prefolds and covers, you can probably get away without a liner and just bleach, they can handle more abuse.

  • That @mapleme changing all the recommendations on me!

  • I bleached every wash and didn't have problems with it coming back.

I did go an extra day between washes so I wasn't excessively bleaching a small batch of diapers every other day. I don't rotate my stash like I probably should.

Wait, what did I say? I know about mold. I know next to nothing about yeast. Yeast scares me. I'm all about bleaching the shit out of bad yeast. I want to learn how to wrangle good yeast (a la sourdough), but according to DHs opinion of the smell of the cheese fridge, I should learn how to wrangle mold first.
Dang, I thought that was you!  Pregnancy brain strikes again.  It was probably MK, no one ever remembers what she says.

  • @Chickypoo2468‌ we do use aplix occasionally. Typically, like 90% of the time we use prefolds.

  • Sorry that did make no sense. We use aplix at night and her pockets are aplix, but she rarely wears them. I thought it was odd too. I ended up looking up pictures online and she does have redness and the little white bumps, but not nearly as bad.

  • I've never had white bumps with yeast diaper rash.

  • Her ped pointed them out to me, but they were little. That's what sparked the Google search.

  • Yeah, sounds odd. Yeast usually likes wet dark cracks and crevices. And again, never had white spots w/ yeast except in the mouth. Did the pedi say it was yeast?

  • Yea.

  • They are like little bumps that have a white color to them. Not gross like a pimple...well obviously they aren't cute but you know how pimples just look like they are filled with puss? Well these bumps don't look like that.

    That probably didn't help...

  • She's sleeping. But this is the picture that I was looking at online earlier. She's just more pink, and less spotty.

    image

  • That picture is definitely yeast! Yikes... but tha's not your kiddo.

    image
  • Oh, and i'm not sure if you cloth wipe or disposable wipe. But cloth with plain water is recommended. Apparently disposables can make yeast worse.
