how much milk at six months?

Hello, I'm somewhat of a lurker but I try to pop on when I can!

My LO is six months, almost seven, and I was wondering at what point should I increase his much milk I send in her bottles to daycare?

She currently has 3 4.5oz bottles that I pump for, and at home is breastfed.

Grandma who looks after her says she can sometimes seem hungry for more, and she has started nursing 4-5.Times a night as opposed to 1-2 times that she used to.

Re: how much milk at six months?

  • The upper limit for any BF baby is 32 oz/day. So, easiest way is to take number of feedings/day and divide. So, if she eats 8x/day, the most she should take per feeding is 4 oz.
she sounds like she may be going through a growth spurt. IMO, 5 oz. bottles should be the absolute max for a BF baby and many won't ever take that much. My 6 month old takes 4 oz bottles and eats 8x/day on average.

  • DD moved to 4oz bottles at 6 months and stayed that way til 12 months. There's no set time when you "should" increase bottles. If you think she needs a bit more, try 5oz.
  • Thank you all! I appreciate it!

  • Around 6 months DD started needing bigger bottles.  We tried 5oz and that didn't seem to cut it, so we're at 6 ounces now and she usually eats it all.  DD is only in daycare two days a week so only has bottles then and on the occasional night out.
  • the composition of BM changes to meet your baby's needs, so you don't need to keep upping the ounces like you would with formula. my DS started with 4 oz bottles and went up to 4 1/2 or 5 oz bottles (depending on how much i could pump that day). since your LO is over 6 months, you might want to consider sending in a snack of solids- like yogurt mixed with appleasauce, or oatmeal mixed with BM, as a PP suggested. then you could probably keep the size of the bottles the same and just add in the solids.
  • My 8 month olds take 3 3oz bottles at daycare (8 hrs). Daycare lady has said they need more and they may drink up to 4oz if it's offered, but are happy with 3 and I'm able to keep up with them pumping 18-20oz/day at work.
