When was the first time you took your lo to the movies?

  • DD was 2y10m. We saw Frozen in December.  It was tough.  The previews were 30 mins and then the movie was 1h40m or so.  The last 30 mins or so she was really bouncing around and whining and ready to go.  I probably wouldn't take her again anytime soon unless it was free or the really cheap movies.
  • DD#1 saw Frozen at 2.5 yrs and did awesome.

  • My 3.5 year old can sit down and watch a movie at home easily. We've taken her to 2 movies in the theaters and she could barely sit still by the end. I'm going to wait until my son is way older to do it.

  • DS is 21 months old and we haven't tried yet.  I don't see him sitting still.  But my friend's daughter is 4, (5 in May) and she has successfully taken her to the movies.  With popcorn to entertain her. :)

  • He can watch nearly a whole movie at home at times while he is eating and I'm doing housework.  I don't like him watching tv, so I only allow it during times when I'm busy with housework (I'm a single mom so I don't have anyone else to entertain him).  I tried to take him to Frozen recently as I live in New England and I'm running out of indoor things to do with him this winter.  He lasted only about 45 minutes in total.  I knew when there was a huge chance we would have to leave when I decided to take him.  I plan on taking him to the How to Train Your Dragon sequel when it comes out in June as he is obsessed with the first one.

  • I took DD1 when she was a little older that 2 to see "Finding Nemo". She *barely* made it through the movie. If you plan to take your LO, just be prepared that you might have to leave.

  • DS1 was 2.5 and sat through Toy Story 3 in the theater with no problems.  DS2 can be a maniac at times and I cannot imagine taking him any time soon.
  • I took my 5 year old for the first time over Christmas to see Frozen.

  • We took my daughter at age 3 and luckily we were the only ones in the theater, becuse all she wanted to do was run up and down the aisles!! I so wish my city offered one of those "toddlers day at the movies" events where everyone else would also have a nutso tot in tow ;)
  • I don't plan to take my DD until she literally begs me.  I feel like there are more cost effective ways for her to watch movies.  She doesn't need the "experience" of a movie theater. In fact, there are more productive ways for us to spend our limited quality time together. And if it is something that never interests her then, fine, we'll do other things :)

FWIW, DH and I go to the movies about once every other month so it isn't that we won't like them.  It just isn't something on the list of experiences I feel like I should provide for my child.

  • DS is 3 and hasn't gone yet. He's never even watched a movie at home - regular shows (like 25 minutes) are more suited for him. I did try to put on Frozen for him because of all the fuss, but he only watched for 20 minutes. Before that I was thinking of taking him to his first movie theater movie but now I think he needs more time. It may be more that he likes what he already knows, because he won't sit through a 1.5 hour movie but if I put his favorite shows on for 1.5 hours straight he would.

  • DS is 4.5 yo and I still haven't taken him to a movie. He can sit through a 20-30 minute planetarium or IMAX movie, though. DD is 21 months and wouldn't last more than 10 minutes.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • DD is 2y3m and I haven't taken her yet. She did watch all of frozen at home but we had to pause it twice for potty breaks.

  • Lurker here.  I have one DD, she's 14 months.

I took DD to a movie when she was 6 months (Despicable Me 2).  She did amazingly.  I went during the day time and the movie had been out for a couple weeks, so the theater was almost empty--us and 2 other families.  I took my Dad as "back up", planned a mid-movie snack, and we sat on the ground level, near an aisle and the exit.  DD wasn't walking yet, and I'm sure that helped tremendously.

I love going to see movies while they're in theater--it's one of my favorite things to do.  I've taken DD a handful of times, and it's honestly easier than it was going to the movies while I was pregnant.

  • I took DDto the movies when she was about 6 months. She didn't watch the movie, she just played and nursed. I missed about 5 minutes when I had to step out bc she was crying. We watched the end of it from the hallway so I could walk her back and forth. It wasn't bad, but not really worth it IME

I don't think I'll be taking her to the movies to watch a movie with the family until she is much much older. Like 4yrs+

  • DS was 3 and he was antsy and annoyed by the end. By 5-6 he got better, now he loves it. DD doesn't sit and watch tv, unless she's sick, so not for a long time.

  • DD just turned 2 and I don't think we'll even try bringing her to the movies until she's at least 4.  Maybe 5.

  • You should check your local movie theaters.  Massachusetts Showcase theaters have "My First Movies" that show an interactive movie with a character doing songs and dancing.  Your local theaters might have something similar.  https://www.showcasecinemas.com/programs/kids-and-families/my-first-movies
  • We took DS when he just turned 3. He was pretty good but about an hour through he wanted to get up and go out the arcade that he saw on the way in. We took him for the second time a couple weeks ago (about a month shy of turning 4). He easily sat through the whole movie.

  • We took DS1 around 4 years or so.  No way he would have been ready before then.  DS2 has even more energy than DS1 did at 18 months.  I think we'll be waiting until at least 4 with him too.

  • We took DD to see Planes in the movies theater when she was 3 years and a couple months.  She could sit and watch the movie, but said she had to go potty about every 20 minutes.  I won't take DS until at least 3.  Maybe more like 4 years old.

Plus the movies are very loud.  I wouldn't want to take DS now anyway.  It would probably hurt his ears.

  • haven't tried yet. ds is 2.5 and i don't see taking him anytime soon. he's watched some youtube clips of bert and ernie but they're very short and i doubt he'd want to sit for 2 hours in a dark theater.

  • DD is almost two an hadn't been to the movies yet, and we don't plan on taking her any time soon. DW and I went to see The Amazing Spiderman when that was out and there was a couple with two little girls there, I think they were about 2 and 4, and they ran around the place being noisy and just generally little girls and they ruined the film for practically everyone there.

I have taken my nephew and niece to the movies though, who are five, to see Frozen, and they were getting really restless and noisy during the adverts, which was fine because so was everybody else, but were totally silent and still during the film itself.
