I went to my 6 week check and the question of how BF came up. I told her that I was having issues with LO not gettin enough. I pump to see how much. Only one time I've only pumped 4 oz total. So I told her that we've been supplementing with formula. She gave me two options....one....stop BF all together and do straight formula OR take a pill. She gave me the side effects of the medicine but I didn't care. I want to do anything and everything to BF my LO. So I'm now on day 3 of the medicine. LO seems to be getting more while BF.
Multiple ectopics, 2 failed IVF's
IVF #1: Did not get to ET, embies all failed PGD (major chromosomal defects)
IVF #2: We have 2 chromosomally perfect embies as a result of PGD (Boy/Girl) 1 failed the thaw (Girl) Transferred 1, yet ended as a c/p

SHOCK BFP 9/28/2012: IT'S A BOY! and everything is normal !!!!!!
Little A born 38w 2d on 05/23/13 and is a true miracle for this IF Vet!
Pumping doesn't show you how much the baby is getting because babies are better at getting milk out. Plus, 4 oz is a lot anyway. Do you have any other evidence she is not getting enough? Is she gaining weight? Enough pee and poop diapers?
DD wasn't gaining much weight. She went for a check up and she wasn't back to her birth weight. She had lost a pound while we were in the hospital. Which I know they lose weight. I will admit I don't pump like I should. I am going to start so I can build up my supply.

There is no amount that you "should" pump while you are establishing your supply and breastfeeding! 4 ounces with a 6 week old is great! A general rule for how much you may pump is about an ounce an hour, give or take. You are doing great!
If you are committed to providing your baby with BM, you need to find a new Pediatrician or not take her advice in regards to feeding because there is absolutely no reason why you can't breastfeed and then supplement with formula as needed. It is not a one or the other choice at all! And, I am a medical professional who works with children in complex medical situations - if BM is available, we always try to use that and use formula to fill in any holes (be it in volume or calories).
I would also suggest seeing a Lactation Consultant and doing a weighted feeding. I found that knowing just exactly how much my DD was eating was super helpful for me and encouraged me that my body was indeed doing what it was supposed to be doing! Some babies, especially as they are fresh and new in this world, just nurse a lot! It may not necessarily mean that she's hungry, but that she really just enjoys eating!
I was surprised that physicians receive little to no nutritional or breastfeeding education in medical school, so they are often no the best source of wisdom, especially with breastfeeding. Follow your instincts, they are just right. You are doing a great job, mama!
And if it's proven you have a supply problem, why is it all or none? I currently have to supplement 2-6 oz a day of formula in addition to BFing. If I can provide him all that perfect, antibody rich milk, why would I stop? Even if I could only give him a little a day, I would.
If you want to continue, do not let this stop you.

Agreed. I have about a half-supply and supplement the rest with formula. There is no reason you need to go all-BM or all-formula. That is really strange advice.
I also wouldn't listen to my OB about how to feed my child. That's an issue that you should be making with the help of your pedi and hopefully a good LC. Your OB specializes in your health -not your child's.
Also, I'd recommend doing a weighted feeding with an LC to see how much your LO is actually transferring before blindly supplementing with formula. Hopefully you'll find out that LO is getting more than you thought! GL!

Thanks for your responses ladies!! I'm going to continue to BF and supplement but also call the lactation specialist. I want only what's best for DD and myself. I am so glad to have this group to chat with. Being a FTM I don't know what to do and I'd rather hear from others than reading a book.

I'm taking 10 MG of metoclopramide. It's the generic for Reglan.

Reglan has some pretty bad side effects IMO. I'd never take it due to impact on me and my babies. Domperidone is much safer despite not being FDA approved in the US.
