I don't know. I spent 9 years watching that show wondering who the mother was and waiting for this great love story. And it was, but why did the writers have to do that ? Why couldn't he and the mother live a long life together ?

That's how I feel! I was wanting this long love story and instead we get this crap (and I hate when they kill off young people. Hate). DH hates Robin so he was really mad. Plus, we spent this ENTIRE season on their wedding day for that to happen??
I was irked robin and barney got a divorce. The whole season was the wedding and then it was just, "oh hey we got a divorce. " the seaon in general was blah to me and I stopped caring about the characters so I wasn't horribly upset, just disappointed

At this point I wish we never really even met the mother, except for the very end where he meets her at the train station. That would have been better than introducing her to us last season and then helping the audience love her ( which I think they did, I can't really say).
Oh and I can't wait for a response from the writers tomorrow. It just feels like they had a twist in the story just for the sake of a twist. Yes, yes I know it wasn't really a twist since they hinted at it several times but come on.
I actually really liked how realistic the ending was. I think long time viewers wanted to see Ted and Robin end up together. I think the writers did a good job of giving everyone what they wanted; on one hand Ted finding his perfect woman, and on the other hand Ted and Robin together. Ted did find that great love in his wife, but the world isn't perfect and sometimes unfortunate things happen. That doesn't mean he should be alone for the rest of his life. Why not be with the woman he's loved since he met her?

I have to think that 7 years ago - viewers did want Robin and Ted together. And I read that the filmed the scene with the kids in 2005, so obviously they couldn't reshoot that. But, at this point things have changed and they had us invested in the freaking mother. And as @CNamom said they waste an ENTIRE season on a wedding day, to rip it apart in 10 minutes. I am annoyed. (But, I am totally glad that you and @KateMW liked it and I am serious. Not sarcastic at all! )

DH and I were just talking about how we think there was just the right amount of exposure of the mother. We don't know a ton about her, but we know that she seems like a cool girl who Ted really likes. I think it was just enough to make me happy for Ted, but not enough for me to be all that attached to her.
As far as the whole season being at the wedding goes - I totally understand why you are angry with that. It didn't bother me, but I get it. Again, I liked it because it's realistic. Marriages do end and to assume the whole cast lived happily ever after would be harder for me to believe.

Someone on FB nailed it -- they acted like Robin and Ted are Ross and Rachel, and the absolutely are not!
Ted is so damn high maintenance -- am I supposed to believe he and the kids adapted to Robin's life? I felt like the entire thing was such a cop out and just contributed to how unlikable Robin had become over the years -- she got exactly what she wanted -- Ted without the dirty of work of having his kids.
Well, she couldn't have his kids even if she'd wanted to.

She also hated kids and wanted no parts of being tied down by them.
YES!!! All of this. The mom was just filler so Ted could get his kids and Robin could have her career. Then kill her off so the two that were "Made for each other" could get together. Gag.

Except you see her with the dogs at the end, so obviously she's settled down some in the 6 or 7 years since we saw her at his wedding. People change.
Anyone notice how robin's hair just got worse and worse throughout the episode. It was so distracting.
YES! It looked horrible when she showed up at Ted's wedding, and it was even worse by the scene with the dogs. I never thought she was that pretty from the start. Though, I agree that she looked great in the scene when they announced their divorce.

I replied to aliebno's thread, but I didn't like the fact that the mother was someone who just showed up at the end (although I see someone mentioned earlier she showed up earlier this season, which I didn't really watch).
What killed me was when the daughter so cheerily said "Mom's been dead for six years, Dad!....). Yeah, I don't see that happening with a teenage girl talking about her mom.
The only redeeming scene for me was Barney meeting his daughter - loved that!
12 hours later - and I hate it even more. I really hate that they had us invest in Robin and Barney just to tear them apart. If they knew (which they obviously did) that Robin and Ted were ending up together, they should have never put Barney and Robin together. And never spent an ENTIRE season on their wedding day.
I am not as upset this morning. I feel like a fool for even letting it get to me because it is just a show with characters. I suppose I identified with the mother and although I am aware of my own mortality, I don't watch comedies to be reminded of that fact. I watch TV for a step outside of reality for a short time.
I don't know. Maybe it hit too close to home. I don't think I am the only one either because I've noticed that the moms are the ones most upset by the finale.
