C-sections

No make up?

I got a letter in the mail with my c-section date, time etc and instructions for the day. It says not to have any make up on. I wore make up at my last c-section and was never told not to. Not to sound vain but I wanted to cover my pregnancy acne for the pictures. Seems like my face is far enough away from the surgical site, it's weird that make up's not allowed.

What were you instructed regarding make up?

Re: No make up?

  • usually they just want no eye make-up for any surgery.  not sure why....but i have always been told this for two non c-section related surgeries I have had.

I was allowed to wear makeup and nail polish and I am glad I did! I also blew out my hair that morning. Call me vain if you must! ;-)

  • Make up was fine (nothing heavy- but normal everyday amounts!). Jewelry was not allowed- not even my plain jane silver stud earrings.

  • I got my instructions from the hospital today and it specifically says, no cosmetics, lotions, deodorants or sprays on skin. When I asked why, the nurse told me there may be certain testing or surgery apparatus they have to use that could be affected by chemicals on your skin.

I wasn't told anything about make up. I don't wear much but definetly had some foundation on. I have little stud earrings I never take out and the nurse asked if I had jewelry and I said just them and offered to take them out but she said they were fine.
  • I wore make-up for my s/c and I also had my nose stud in.  No one said anything to me, but it was an emergency s/c and I have been there for hours already.  Strange.

I wasn't told one way or the other, but I'm pretty certainly I didn't wear any. I also didn't wear any jewelry - not that my rings fit anyway at that point lol

It's the petroleum in some makeup products in chapstick and Vaseline that is flammable and can cause serious burns.

  • Makeup and contacts are fine. I feel bad for those moms that have the post delivery glasses for pictures. I always wanted to look good, too. I feel ya!

I love the pictures I have from the delivery room - even though I was wearing my glasses and had no makeup on *gasp* I was also strapped down and cut wide open, but you're right, my glasses ruined it because they took away from my beautiful daughter that was just born.

    Grow up.

I don't wear makeup often.  And I wear glasses all the time.  So my baseline of looking/feeling good is obviously different from other people's.  But that aside, I kind of figure, when you see pictures of moms who just gave birth, you aren't thinking that Mom A just went through labor and a vaginal birth and not surprisingly looks like it, while Mom B had a scheduled c/s and didn't break a sweat.   Nobody's expecting glamor shots, and while we all feel like grubby whales in the last stages of pregnancy, I don't think people see us the way we feel, especially in those first moments with our babies.

  • My hospital is no make-up, jewelry, contacts, or nail polish.  It has to do with the chemicals that might be in the make-up and also changes in skin and nail color can show signs of complications arising.

  • My cs was unplanned, but I was not asked to remove any makeup. I honestly can't remember if I was wearing any. I was also allowed to wear my glasses (which I wear all the time voluntarily ;) ) and I don't think I had any other jewelry on. They asked me several times if I did and it seemed important but there wasn't a lot of time for questions so I never found out what would have been allowed.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

No deodorant? They didn't say anything about deodorant and I'm gonna need it since I won't be showering for a couple days lol
  • @bingbongsmama‌ you should be up and able to take a shower the next day. The first shower was glorious as was the one I took everyday until I went home!

  • My first c/s was unplanned... went in for monitoring (due to pre-e) and they told me I was going to have a csection (high risk pregnancy with twins so they said enough's enough).  I had make up and contacts in since I didn't expect to deliver that day.  They didn't ask me to take my contacts out or remove my make-up, but since now I have a planned RCS, I'm curious as to what my instructions will be.  I'd like to wear my contacts too, it's just easier for me, but I'll do whatever they say.  We're only there for one purpose and that's to deliver a healthy baby as smoothly as possible!
  • I was told no make up as well. I did put a little bit on (which you totally can't tell in pictures as I look horrible and tired anyway lol). I have pretty bad pregnancy acne so I put some coverup on, blush and mascara.

Also, I went out and got a gel manicure a few days before so that my nails would look pretty too. Then found out no nail polish either. Gel mani's are a huge pain to remove that was super annoying!!

  • Each hospital must have a different policy. Mine was planned but I wasn't told anything about makeup ahead of time and of course I wore it. If I remember correctly they did make me take my wedding ring off, which I guess had something to do with potential swelling. Lotion or perfume did not matter as they made me take a shower and wash with some special antiseptic soap when we got to the hospital. I would have still worn some discreet makeup (coverup and mascara) even if they had told me not to. I never leave the house without those.
  • There's also an allergy factor. A lot of makeup has a lot of fragrance. They try to keep an OR asSterile as possible, including restricting artificial smells. Also, I'm concerned about your level of vanity at a really inappropriate time.
